Because it’s a convenient way to make conversation with strangers, and replaces a degree of intimacy I wouldn't otherwise have. With the irony being that I can stop and step back from my phone or computer at any time and interact with people in real life, making it redundant as an issue. But don't, because I'm addicted to the internet and chronically online.

They need something in their otherwise empty life. With no friends, gf or a healthy relationship with family their social skills are almost completely nonexistent. With them not having jobs they have lots of free time but instead of using it to better themselves they start fabricating a life more in line with what they want for themselves. There's a hefty amount of control issues too. Their lives are wildly out of control yet empty so lying fills it for them and makes them feel like at least something is within their control.
The end goal of most here is to fabricate a convincing enough lie about someone else here that others will believe so they can all group up against that other person. To keep it short they're lying to hopefully make connections with people who are just as awful as they are. They'll decry things like discord but then hop into a group call to talk trash on bant posters.
It's all miserable people who want to have somewhere they belong with communal hatred. If the cost of gaining that is showing yourself to be a liar so be it.
It's a very sad way to live your life where you have to make up things about other people just to get some kind of attention.

This is another thing you'll notice a lot. Hiding behind the auspices of trolling for why you're a cunt online. A hefty percentage of the population here thinks being annoying online is a personality so they lean into it. Nothing is won nor lost. Much like the anons themselves it just exists. A thing that happened.
There's a multitude of reasons for this behavior but at the end of the day it can all be traced back to a lack of personality development leading to infilling with negative attention craving behaviors as success, personal development and self awareness are non options for them.

I'm a remnant from the early years of 4chan. I've been here over 2 decades across various boards. I've grown in 4chan and used the failures of others as lessons or motivation to do better. It's second nature to me now but I'm also very poorly received here. There's a thread with my face from 7 years ago up right now trying to fabricate lies as always. You know what I'm guilty of? Life, wife and job having. I used to be a salesman so I know how to talk to people. I enjoy talking with people so I come back to have random conversation in spite of "discord tranny groomer chat room" sperging.
I stayed because it's my home. I've made great friends here and elevated them to do better.
