Nerds are an outsider group. They are ostracized and given low status in society during high school. But in adulthood many now are very powerful in society, and most nerds seem to be very pro outsider. So I wonder if nerds are more likely to be left leaning due to being an outsider in their youth and thus identifying and empathizing with any group in society that is seen as an outsider and ostracized or given low status or seen by nerds as being oppressed by society. The idea is that due to in their youth being at the low end of the totem pole socially that they hold onto this into adulthood and have a grudge against the dominant society that looked at them as losers and at the normal people who saw them as losers. So they do not like normal society as they see normal society as wrong for seeing them as losers and they instead favor outsiders as the outsiders did not call them losers or the outsiders were seen as low status like the nerds.
One example of this is that it seems nerds have been influential in promoting atheism. This is because christianity has been the traditional dominant religion and as the typical outsider they want to reject it. All forms of mainstream traditional culture is rejected by the nerd.
