My guess is the dog wasn't walked or looked after as much as rge child came along. It was a pet for Xmas not another member of the family. Dogs require exercise almost 3 hours a day on medium dogs until they age a lot older. It works out at about 4 walks. The garden isn't a walk although it means less walks if they frequent it for the toliet. You cannot leave it outside, away from the family, it can become a guard dog and even more unpredictable. Because dogs are pack animals and require attention.
That problem was in the above. Leaving them alone together at that age. Not providing the dog with enough exercise. Possibly excluding the dog from the rest of the pack.
Dogs are protective and mark territory. Food is one of those things they don't share at all well. Take it away when they're eating try it. Two dogs and they'll assert dominance over it. Children never understand this. The next is rousing any animal sleeping. Like humans.
My guess it was the child's fault. Hence nothing occurred. Ultimately they were left alone together.
