The honking was them driving out another native bird, like a loon, or a wood-duck.
Also, and this would be illegal, but I dream of the day people kill these things with air-rifles, and then burn the feathers off, and chop them into catfish food, and dump them in the water. I hate them. Absolutely thought they were cool when I didn't live near water, but they are the opposite of cool. They are animal niggers, they need urban areas in most of the US to thrive, they are mean and violent to anything and anyone they can be, they cross roads slowly outside of crosswalks, stand in the road, and literally leave gross shit all over the place.
If you catch them on your land, make sure you tell the warden they're doing damage, and you're going to bag any that are on your grounds, and then do so, promptly. Anything you have to do to get to removing them.
