most old source code is probably lost. Its also possible to reverse engineer source code so its not a huge deal.

Only the original PC version, and only since 1997. This is the source code for the SNES port, which was written in assembly iirc. Though it was already released for a while

I think it's mostly thanks to John Carmack who is a amazing programmer. He wanted to share his code with everyone so they can learn from it and iterate on it. So games like Doom and Quake are just public and anyone can use the code to learn and develop their own works. Carmack lost interest in video games and he gets into cars and rocket science and even AGI so he has more important things to focus his big brain on. It's a very kind act from a very rich man who can do whatever he wants, so he gave away his source code. Most companies are not like John Carmack. He deserves a ton of respect and praise. He did the heavy lifting for us.

The companies shouldn't be "forced" to do anything. We just need sensible copyright laws. The current laws are at Jewish levels of rent seeking that don't make any sense. If you were to write a book, copyright extends at least 50 years after your death and even places like the EU it's 70 years after death. In this scenario it means that it's companies or the family estate that keeps collecting money long after (maybe even 100+ years since) the work was published.

A sensible approach would just be to have copyright last for 20 years after the work is published. So from the date the first edition of a book or game is released, that should start a counter. 20 years I think is a good balance, it will allow for creators to collect some income from royalties or license but also encourage them to create more works over the course of their life. The problem is of course is that you will get industry trying to lobby for 20 years to become 25, 30 and so on. So I don't know, I think maybe a proper solution is to have it put in something like a constitution, so it's not so easy to change with the stroke of a pen. Here if we want to change the constitution the people must vote on it for example, so something like this might be the way to keep copyright at a sensible level.

Carmack was smart enough to know that after the engine had gone through enough changes and improvement for the later versions, the old version is going to be obsolete anyway. By "giving it away", it actually helps you, because the thing has a specific format for levels, animations and so on. So if someone is using the older version they're building stuff on top of all of that. So long as they kept a certain amount of compatibility between versions you're keeping people within your "ecosystem" so to speak.

It reminds me when piracy of Windows and Office was rampant in China. Microsoft knew this full well. They never really cracked down on it, because they knew if they did they'd push more people towards linux or mac, open office and so on. So they just experimented with pricing and got it such that it was cheap enough for the average person to afford and not worth the effort to pirate. But also not locking down the piracy protection too hard, just making it an annoyance that most non-technical people won't be bothered with. Keeps the "mind share" (everyone learning and using Microsoft stuff).

A lot of projects like that, including Gnome, they just get money from companies (like Red Hat). In some cases it's a pretty decent amount like the Gnome guys were getting donations of $900k a year. So with that you can pay at least a couple of devs a decent salary to work on projects full time. The problem is that if you have a random sperg that's just interested in things (like tech) and doesn't know anything about business (because that requires being good with people) and you just toss him some money, it's a recipe for disaster.

There must be a better way to do things, like they could have a license which says yeah this is free for personal use, but if you have a business it's $20 a year license for some small business. With that they could actually get a signal (like if some businesses say: fuck this, we'd rather pay $99 a year to Microsoft because open office is buggy and clunky and you still haven't fixed those bugs so good riddance). At the moment the vast majority of the "foundations" behind open source are completely isolated from such market signals. And in a lot of cases, getting to pay themselves a six figure salary has gone a bit to their head. You'll also notice that the sly bastards will love to talk up about how it's all about "volunteers" and "go do it yourself", when they're just lazy fucks that are getting high on their own supply, i.e. they've decided the users need this or that but they have no real clue what they're doing. They want to be like Steve Jobs but they simply don't have the taste or people skills. They might think they do but they've never had to do things like start a real company, it's more like some meme NGO or charity than it is a company.

things like variable names, and comments, and sometimes the high-level structure of the program, which helps idiot programmers get their heads around things
sometimes there are also techniques used to try and prevent reverse-engineering
you might not get back what was written too, because of those 'compiler optimisations' I mentioned, where part of the code gets re-written to be better (but maybe less understandable)

so it can be done, but it can often be quite a difficult process
people use tools like 'Ghidra' (released by the NSA), 'IDA', or 'Hex-Rays'

Everyone gets this idea in their head that having an "idea" is worth something, even a lot of money. It's not the case. A good example of what I mean is something like fusion power. The hard work is in actually making it work. Which is why it's always been 30 years away. I would say the scientists that finally crack that deserve to make plenty of money. But there is a point where you want this technology deployed everywhere, including poorer countries. I don't see the sense in saying, no you need to keep doing royalties (through these companies that have no connection even to the original inventors) and that needs to keep going for 70 years. I would also say that anyone who makes such huge discoveries isn't ever going to have a problem looking for a job or funding ever. That's what we should be encouraging. Right now patents on inventions are 20 years, but some faggy ass nigger autotune music allows Jews in a record company to collect a check for 70 years after the niggers die? That doesn't make any sense.

The NSA really isn't what it used to be. If you go to security conferences you'll meet a strong independent Mexican woman that has been promoted fast (like they do in the military too). A lot of the guys that were really good, they tend to get poached or leave because the pay and benefits are just way better in the private sector. The guys that stay (out of a sense of patriotism and wanting to "pay back" for all the free training and upskilling they got, those people are few and far between). Then there are the guys that stay just because it's a government job. That's not to say the NSA isn't hiring contractors (including former employees) big bucks to work on things, but I wouldn't count them as NSA as such because they have no obligation to keep doing the contract work.
