A huge chunk of it is like living in a 2nd world country like Russia. It's called the "underdeveloped core". When talking to foreigners they assume I am from California and I often have to correct them about assumptions about my lifestyle living in the core.

Honestly, the people are great.
US folks are kind hospitable people; most of them would give you the shirt off their back.
Like all large nations they do have their share of strange people. These eccentricities in their people are tolerated because it is a truly free nation.
To that end, it's amazing that it's such a huge nation with a massive military promotes freedom and the pursuit of happiness.
It's sad that their government has no transparency and has become so polarized. The country could use some liberalism and focus more on its people.
Also the US needs to relax on the ever-pervasive military culture and be honest about its military and its application; to protect its economic interests.
Ultimately, it's sad that the government has been shafting its people for a long time now. Seems Americans do not trust their own government anymore. Politicians are seen as dishonest and corrupt. Which is all very sad.
