Recently I rewatched Batman the animated series and beyond and Static Shock, I can say there was that same garbage we have now but only show different and without pandering like ITS POLITICAL! but more mellow, I mean first the plot than the commentary built around it.
Like many of the bullying theme in Batman beyond or the "youth criminality" (terry best friend ends up in prison becasue always pushed by family and jocks) "youth drugs" (kids take venom and start to steal from parents then from shops) "youth lost in media" (episode where bag thieves live in VR and to pay for VR start to steal)
I mean I loved the stories then the themes.
TL DR
