If you judge thread quality by post count whichever thread has the most trolls is going to be the better thread. That's usually /bant/ because all the trolls minus perhaps IQDELET migrated here.

However /bant/ only has a handful of serious metal posters, and if the trolls chase one or two of those guys off (or get them banned) the thread speed dies. This appears to have happened.

The endgame is people who want to talk about metals probably move back to /biz/ while the trolls troll each other on /bant/ and the world is a happier and brighter place.

The ideal /pmg/ thread composition is a couple dozen stackers and collectors and ONE (1) dedicated troll or clown.

The problem before email verification was that this ratio became unbalanced. IQ by himself threw off the balance with a few hundred posts per day. But add in some bob/jesse/schizo drama and the thing goes to shit. The trolls overwhelm the discussion.

current /biz/pmg/ shows the opposite extreme. Where nobody is trolling or going off topic, the discussion is very focused, and extremely boring. This is the ideal situation for moderators, but perhaps not ideal for users.
The ideal is a balance, with some trolling and off topic joking alongside a healthy discussion of metals. It's rare in /pmg/ history to find this balance, and it doesn't usually last long. There's either way too much trolling or none at all. Neither is optimal.

is to get a much larger group of people who are enthusiastic about stacking and love to discuss it. This situation happened in the early /pmg/ years, but was trampled by market conditions and the fact that for most people, stacking is a fad or passing interest.

Huge moves in metals prices will attract more real users to the thread, but we don't have control over that. Until metals moon, the thread(s) are going to be slow. And even when metals do moon, the interest won't last much past the initial hype and public awareness. A year or two maybe. People get bored with it.

integrating less cyclical topics such as numismatics or day trading could help, and has helped in the past. But true OG, OCD stackers want purity in their threads and at best tolerate other interests and approaches. Often they don't tolerate them at all.

the difficulty in doing this is highlighted every time the thread splits.

we decide mining stocks isn't a PM discussion and we toss them out. There goes half our userbase to another thread. We decide there's too much spam so we implement email verification, and again the thread is split in half

we decide the thread's not big enough for 2 or 3 specific people, and again the thread is split in half.

every time we decide to make the thread "more pure," we decimate it. The split off threads may do ok (cmmg) but both threads ultimately suffer, and some of them ARE going to die. There's barely enough interest to keep one thread going with lots of related topics. If we split each topic or approach off to make it more pure, we simply kill that thread. And probably the one we split it off of as well. There's not enough users for that kind of horseshit.

I understand what you mean by being "overly-serious" in a thread. The lack of small amounts of trolling and joking makes it harder for new people to feel comfortable with posting (i.e. you are less likely to want to post if every reply in the thread is a wall of text about some statistics about metals, compared to if there were some occasional memes that were friendlier to people with less knowledge).

the /biz/bant/ split has been an interesting experiment in moderation vs. free speech.

I don't expect there to be any /biz/ generals left on /bant/ a year from now just because while nobody likes being moderated, we want others to be moderated.

if the split did nothing more than get rid of IQ, I'd say it was a success. If /pmg/ is really lucky it got rid of a couple other trolls at the same time, including me.

we're in a pretty big correction right now. My house is down 20% from a couple years ago. Which may not seem like a lot, but it didn't go down that far in 2008, and 20% loss is over $100k cheaper.

I have to sell about half my stack. My stack isn’t big and I’m poor. I have about half in junk silver half dollars and dimes and the rest in brittanias, maples, and libertads.

I want to for sure keep all the libertads and the maples. The brittanias have milk spots so I am ok with choosing those as well. I will still need to get rid of some of the junk silver though. Should the dimes go or the half dollars?

However, I feel like the Libertads are essential to my economic collapse last resort plan. I live right by the Mexican border and spend a lot of time there. They are legal tender in Mexico, people know what they are there and I feel like I’d have an easier time bartering or using them there if it came to it. I guess the maples can go then i just like them because they’re nice

I had the dimes for the same purpose, but they’re all Roosevelt dimes and even though they’re silver I can imagine trying to explain the difference to someone and just getting told to fuck off.

Hey fren, I bought this 208 page book with a folded map for about 31 cents with tax at a thrift store yesterday and it appears to be an exceptionally rare and desirable piece. It's "Alexandre's Compendium" of "Facts about Oklahoma City in detail, Oklahoma Territory in general and Kiowa & Comanche Country in particular" which was published in territorial Oklahoma City in April 1901. The 1900 census shows a population of 10,050 and Mr Alexandre states a population of 14,000 in OKC when published. Population is like 1.6 million now, so something like this would be a holy Grail for collectors of Oklahoma City antiques and history. I saw an auction house catalog entry showing just the map in a picture frame (not sure if just the map or the whole book was for sale) with an estimate of $1,000-5,000 which probably means they couldn't find any good info either. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I might put it on eBay for $2,999 OBO and see what happens if I can't figure it out.

Here's a more relevant batch of cheapies I won yesterday for $12.54 total with tax (free shipping kek) from the same seller I got a batch of spoons from for about $29.50 last weekend but which didn't ship until the 20th. Back in the 80's they taught kids in school speed reading and typing. My genius is almost entirely verbal, I read and type at extraordinary speeds. I also remember almost everything I read and write.

what this means is I can bump your thread with interesting anecdotes and factoids

or I can destroy it by responding to a dozen different conversations and posters in real time faster than they can formulate replies. I have a history of doing this in /pmg/. Back in 2019 and 20 I would debate everyone in the thread at once, posting over 175 times per thread, and running through the bump limit in a matter of minutes.

I don't require someone to debate. I'm perfectly happy talking to myself if nobody is around. Usually while I'm doing this I am also reading technical papers, writing proposals or contracts, and working on a novel. I am good with words. Very fast. A veritable flood of verbal garbage.

Filtering me has no effect on the bump limit. I actually have to try not to post too often. My natural state is flooding your thread with redundant, prolix posts on tangentially related topics. I try to spread it out over several boards because if I focus my attention on one thread I destroy it.

I am not the only person here like that.
It's a fairly common autistic trait.

It's been 90+ forever here, sucks balls. For the past 8 hours I've been sweating my ass off going through crates upon crates of my old fossil and mineral collection, some things I haven't seen since I was in highschool. You'd probably have fun helping me look through a literal ton of rocks. I finally found the Halysites coral specimen I was looking for in center of pic, all the matrix/host rock had dissolved naturally over the aeons so it's such a cool piece to study, I luv me chain corals.

My back is giving me a hard time this year so far, doctors seems to think my body got accustomed to the experimental treatment i was injecting for the past decade, and it's no longer duping my immune system.

Regarding the cheapies, IIRC my cheapest eBay slurp was about $15.50 total for around 460 grams of sterling so neither batch of souvenir spoons will match that but I'm pretty confident they'll be under my target average of $10/ozt asw. The ~$45 batch of 65 full size forks and spoons could become my best eBay slurp ever if they're all silver but it's unlikely, it went against my rule of studying pics to confirm value but I couldn't resist taking that little gamble. More than 50% of such gambles have worked out in my favor but realistically the odds in this instance aren't quite as good. Anyway I hope your own score is everything you hope for and that we have you back in the saddle slurping enviable cheapies and dabbing on the eternal grabbler with us ASAP, take care man.

The Fed handles a lot of mundane transmissions related to intra-bank transfers. Like every time you write a personal check, that gets batched in a transmission from your bank processor to the Fed. i just bought 150oz in like 2021 and then just stopped and now i just let it do nothing until the banking system collapses over the next 5 years. i plan to dump it all and buy property and maybe stocks and then just put the rest into a ISA for retirement
