My first batch of souvenir spoons got delivered this morning and it turned out a bit better than expected! 17 out of the 60 spoons are hallmarked sterling silver, I wasn't expecting several of the normal size spoons to be good silver.

Total cost with tax was $29.43 for 234g of .925 ($4.23/ozt asw for 6.96 Troy ounces of pure) with a melt value just over $200. I'm waiting on a 2nd batch of ~60 spoons from the same seller which only cost $12.54 total, I think that has a mix of .800 and .925 and will update upon arrival. Happy hunting frens!

Thanks. I multi-task. If I'm posting here in the daytime I'm probably doing paperwork at the same time.

At the moment the tranny made that comment to me I was bidding 2 jobs worth a total of $300k. I believe I was writing the emergency response plan for the jobsites. I got both contracts a week later. I made almost a third of a million dollars while shitposting with you and the tranny the whole time. I also memorized our conversation, and every conversation since then. I began work on my novel with a rough outline, and hired 2 new people for my crew. I completed 3 monthly P&L's in that time period. I'm a busy guy. I waste a lot of time here but that's just for fun. This thread runs in the background while I'm working.

You gotta remember way back in the day that silver was worth barely over face value. It wasn't even worth melting unless you had literal tons of the stuff. It's a bit like pennies and nickels today. Yeah, they're worth more than face, but not enough to make it worth melting unless you have tons. They are essentially junk. Trash. Scrap. Melt.

zinc pennies have value even now, but I'd bet a lot of you guys would consider them junk. Value changes over time. We're one good zinc shortage away from pennies getting melted for scrap.

I think over half of the US silver coins circulating in the 60's got melted. Some estimates are as high as 80% of them.

I left some doré in a bucket under my porch 20 years ago. Gold is finally high enough I went out and retrieved it today.

But, they made the change to type 2 in 1991 (the coin in the pic above is a 91 type 1, before they switched), so how does the 1990 have the ridges? I've bought and graded coins by this guy, so I would be surprised if he is selling fakes.

they don't always verify authenticity. Only on certain classes of coins. It's possible for NGC to grade and slab a fake coin. They don't verify authenticity on a lot of obscure stuff.

yes, as long as money has existed the average dude had extremely little of it. Or none. The average guy was a farmer or some other type of peasant that rarely saw money. Owed more than he made. Spent everything he got.

I'd guess recently in the US, say mid-1900's the average american probably had some savings, but I doubt they kept it in physical silver.

speaking of which, found some silver from the 1800's today. That stuff is extremely rare. I find about one silver coin every 5 years. Today was the day. I was detecting a ghost town midden where I had found a seated dime about 20 years back, and I found another one! Same spot. Somebody just dropped some silver in the trash I guess. Picrelate, today's silver find. Might just go out and screen the whole midden to see what else is in it.

In 35 years of detecting Wild West ghost towns I've found about 100 pennies and nickels

this is all the silver coins I've ever found with a detector. I have to conclude silver was extremely rare in that time and place. Either that or it was so valuable people didn't lose it often. This is an extraordinarily small number of coins for how long I've been detecting.

Absolutely, but there's no way they found all the silver and gold and left behind hundreds of other coins and jewelry worth thousands of dollars.

I'm sure a lot of stuff was found long before I showed up, but the ratio shouldn't change. If I find one silver coin to every 20 pennies, that was always the ratio.

I've found over 100 of them in the same time it took me to find those 7 silver coins.

this tells me I'm detecting places nobody has ever detected before. Or if they did detect it, they sucked at it. It also tells me that silver coin was incredibly rare at least in the mining towns in my area.

exactly right. The places I detect were company towns, the miners were mostly paid with scrip for the company store, a cabin, and then a check once a month. Not a lot of coins of any sort circulating. Lots of tokens, lots of pennies and nickels.

I know silver was far more common after the turn of the century, scrapchad has an amazing pile of gutter coins from the 1900's. But victorian miners sure didn't seem to use coin much at all.

Thank you for info on the vial also. I had to pull out a lens to see the mold line, and you're right. Goes clear to the lip. The bottom of this one has a weird glass droplet on it which keeps it from standing up. I tried to get a pic. It is from exactly the same batch of garbage as 2 seated dimes. I've previously found about 10 tiny vials of various size and manufacture in this midden. All in the same spot as the dimes.

The midden also contains food trash such as bones, as well as the usual boots and nails. I've found 2 civil war era brass bootheel plates in the pile. The ones with the heart shaped cutouts. There's a bunch of broken dishes and crockery, including beer mugs and shot glasses. This makes me think probably saloon midden. I've found one saloon token on the site, but not from that town.

The town was founded in 1860 and abandoned by 1917. So it's possible the midden is actually the remains of a saloon that burnt down or collapsed around that later date, releasing its contents into the wild. I feel like the vials were probably morphine as there's no indication there was an assay shop at the location. Just bar stuff. I've never found a whole bottle at the spot but I'd love to dig it with you if you want. I fear it may just be full of dimes and tiny vials!

I like it too. It was found about 8 inches deep next to a large rock on the side of the road.

I figure some guy sat down on the rock at the side of the road to rest or maybe eat lunch, and it fell out of his pocket into the grass or dirt. It was on the right hand side if you sit on the rock facing the road.

I love how stuff tells its story. How it got there is as interesting as what it is. That coin taught me to always detect around big ol sitting rocks on the sides of 100 year old roads. A trick which has paid off a few times for me.

I found it in Colorado by some old coke ovens at an elevation of 12,000 feet. The ground there is frozen 9 months out of every year, and the spot was flat and dry. It did not move, but the grass grew over it every year until it was finally 8 inches down. That's about the limit of how far down my detector will find a dime, so finding it was pure luck. Just the faintest of signals and I was bored so I decided to dig it up.

Sadly almost all are roached but I've found a couple 1890s barbers and a few 19th century V nickels and Indians, all lost no earlier than the 1920s though. I figure that shinplasters through the late 1870s and greenbacks were super prevalent even in western hard-money friendly regions back in the boomtown glory days. When specie exchange for greenbacks resumed and value stabilized in the late 1870s most normal people would've preferred carrying an ounce or 2 of trusted paper around instead of a cumbersome and conspicuous sack of coins.

Anyway I appreciate your explanation of the dump and broader context of the ghost town, always interesting to read stuff like that. If the saloon burned closer to 1917 when the town was already dead I wouldn't expect it to have been cleaned up and dumped elsewhere, but regardless the other stuff you found doesn't look burned, shell buttons would've been cooked into quicklime and turned to dust and bone buttons into brittle crumbly bone ash, plus the vial looks unaltered too.

I think you're right about it being a saloon dump, but the vials are probably more mundane than the "morphine or opium" attribution that I consider more of a meme and advertising tactic deployed to make those babbybottles more interesting to the uninitiated. I have dug literally a thousand of them (only keep the most interesting ones) and have a handful of undug vials still with labels and contents and they're usually just things like "bile beans" or "little liver pills", medicines that habitual drinkers would've taken frequently, so being plentiful in a saloon dump makes perfect sense.

Checked and agreed. I know they're not the same, but I've really liked all the burgers with 50% or more Polish ancestry I've met IRL. It's hard to put my finger on but in my experience they tend to be intelligent practical craftsmen and rather observant, humorous and good-natured people. I agree regarding the lack of fire damage. There's evidence in other areas that the town itself burned down, but I'm not seeing that on this particular trash pile. Also the trash layer isn't particularly deep, maybe a foot or so. Just trash and ashes they tossed out the back door in a pile. The dime I found yesterday is one I should've found in previous visits to the spot. I guess it was either sloppy detecting on my part the first few times around, or perhaps it was standing on edge in the soil and didn't give my detector a wide enough signal for me to notice. It's tiny, but it set the detector off like a tin can would this time around. Not sure how I missed it before. Could've come closer to the surface via frost heaving or prairie dog action but the trash layer really isn't deep enough to hide it.

anyways, this pic is a different saloon midden I've been screening the last couple years. This one also has no bottles, but I've found a handful of tokens in the stove ashes. Most of them burnt to garbage, but one worth a small fortune. Whenever I get time I go screen a couple feet of dirt and see what comes up.

Kek, sounds like an unusually fun place to work. Maybe racial jokes of the sort we're referring to are still big in melting-pot cities out East or the industrial Midwest, but besides a bunch of guys calling a 100% Italian classmate a greasy Wop Dago almost every day from 6th-8th grade (all good-natured and taken in stride of course) I haven't really seen it. I love it lol, sieves/sifters are very underrated and some of my absolute favorite tools. I use them for all sorts of tasks like garden soil prepping or seed processing, not just for coin/relic hunting. Hardware cloth nowadays sucks ass, my primary and largest soil sifter uses antique 1/4" thick gauge woven (instead of the lazy overlaid modern shit) screen i found in a collapsed old barn, definitely save any stuff like that if you find some in your travels it's incomparably superior.

we think alike, that had crossed my mind as well. The place is littered with cans and barrel hoops and such. That would completely mask it from the detector. In places where I find several tokens I'll either dig and pile up every scrap of iron in the ground to get at the coins, or I'll screen the entire dump. I only found one token and a dime at this spot prior so I never put that much effort into it. The token is valuable, it's probably worth about a thousand dollars, but there's no real reason to suspect there's more tokens at this saloon. One token from another town is probably just a random drop, not a place that regularly used and discarded tokens on site. Pic is the one I found in the dime dump. I hunt the saloons that threw out dozens of the things. Those locations are less common, but when I find one I clean it out.

this is why my detector buddies hate me. I'll systematically clean out an entire trash dump finding dozens of coins while they get bored and move on to the next place and find nothing.
they're relying on luck, while I'm searching newspapers and tax records and combing through dumps to locate the good spots, and then systematically emptying them. My method is incredibly productive, I find easily 20 times more tokens than they do in the same amount of time. They may be having more fun than me, but I doubt that too. I enjoy targeted hunts more than random finds.

only screen I've ever found was window or door screen made of COPPER! I've seen that at 2 locations now, it's a strange thing to find. If I ever come across a decent grating I'll definitely snag it!

Hell yeah, I'd be doing the exact same thing, whenever you stumble upon a rich spot ya gotta systematically mine it out. Besides the loot it also puts to rest any niggling anxiety about what might have been left behind. I've dug through several rotten copper/brass window or door screens in dumps before, probably all 120+ years old. I keep my eyes open but haven't found any good ones yet.

Anyway here's what I've been working on, I've used up almost 2 gallons of HCl prepping crates of petrified wood. Got lots of killer 50 million year old "Blue Forest" material that was covered with caliche and had ugly orange calcite filling crevices lined with lovely botryoidal blue chalcedony. I've sharpened some small stone chisels to carefully remove crud that the acid can't tackle and will need another jug of HCl but I'm very happy with the progress. Some of these pieces looked like garbage before but are turning out to be beautiful specimens. Got some good value in this pile of rocks.

Cleaning isn't a problem for non-numismatic bullion - especially if noticeably circulated. But milk spots are a particular problem - they can't be cleaned chemically, but can be rubbed off with white plastic eraser, like Staedtler brand. Problem is, you can scratch the surface. The removal result is still not perfect either.

Oh man, I'm obsessed and will talk about that stuff for days. The history fascinates the hell out of me.

I have this OCD quirk. I usually make my best find a few minutes after getting out of the truck, and then don't find anything for the rest of the day, right? I step out of the vehicle, turn on the detector, find a coin, detect around for another couple minutes, then go home.
So this location I've never really seriously combed over because I keep finding coins every time I go there. That's not why I missed that second dime, I've detected exactly where it was several times. But I expect what I need to do is go up there and work the spot in a detailed manner to see what else is there. Then rake some of the dirt to see what comes to the surface. Finally dig a few test pits to confirm the depth of the trash layer. I'm extremely good with the detector, so if the layer is less than a foot and a half deep I can be pretty confident I got most or all of the tokens, if not the dimes. As much as I absolutely love finding silver dimes, they're not valuable. Not really what I collect either. If I find another dime or two in the dump I'm going to screen it for sure because that indicates a lost cache or something. 2 dimes in one spot is really strange, but 3 or more would demand examination. I'll go hit it this weekend so long as there's no bike or running race going through the old town this weekend. Hopefully it rains too, that keeps the humans out of the woods and away from the ghosts.

Stunning wood! Blue Forest material is so hot right now! I do the same for removing carbonate material. Acid first, Flathead screwdrivers and needles as chisels. Sometimes a variable speed dremel or a glass engraving/etching tool. I love the dremel for taking out big patches fast. I use various bits, but mostly burrs, files, and saw bits for soft rock. Hard rock I hit with a diamond tip. That's a fantastic pile of wood there!

For silver, I wash circulation dirt with dish soap - a small drop between thumb and index finger, and run the item. My finger is not going to do damage. The soap doesn't react with silver. Then if there's tarnish, I'll use the boiling water/baking soda/Aluminum bath to desulfide the surface. Then wash again and rinse thoroughly.
I have used the eraser to remove milk spots, but never to original shine. It works pretty well on matte surfaces, especially if you don't rub too hard or so long that you go beyond just removing and start polishing the matte. But mostly I just chalk up milk spotting as a scourge to live with.

My 2nd batch of souvenir spoons was delivered yesterday, another sweet slurp!

Total cost was $12.54 for 60 spoons and a random bic lighter sleeve. 19 spoons are good silver, shown on scale in pic. 5 are .925 sterling, 2 are German .835, and 12 are .800 silver. Total weight is 197g of which about 165g or 5.3 Troy ounces is pure silver with a melt value around $155. Works out to about $2.37 per Troy ounce which is a particularly good deal for eBay scrap. With shipping and tax to account for getting cheapies for less than $5/ozt obviously isn't nearly as commonplace and easy as finding ~$10/oz lots. Keep your eyes peeled and happy hunting frens!

Yeah man, if I'm not careful I'll sperg out for an hour gushing about the stratigraphy and theorizing about the depositional makeup, source of the waste and directional orientation of loads of rubbish in dumps I'm digging. I'm extremely good at reading the clues from test holes and visualizing what a dump looks like in undug parts, how wagonloads were dumped and where things rolled, and intuiting where concentrations of good shit is hiding. I find it exhilarating but even serious bottle digger friends get glassy-eyed if I subject them to too much of that, lol.

Based, I'm not OCD about it but ya kinda just have a gut instinct *knowing* when you've made the find of the day. Gotta poke around a bit to make sure it's not a spill/cache of course but I've packed up and gone home early many times after lucking upon something unusually special. Getting the find cleaned up, researched if necessary, and generally just soaking up and enjoying the discovery is a great way to spend an afternoon.

Hell yeah good luck brotha, I think your plan of attack sound great. Definitely do some test pits to determine the total depth of the dump and to see if any spots are masked with layers of rotting metal. I've had good results using a mattock to peel back the top ~6" of sod/soil over a square yard or so at a time when detecting certain areas, to remove shallow modern shredded aluminum junk signals in some areas or to remove overburden that buried old paths or high traffic areas in other areas. Please let me know how your hunt goes whether or not you find anything noteworthy, even merely figuring out the depth of the dump could pay good dividends on later hunts.

Thanks for the Dremel recommendation for the petrified wood btw, I guess it's pretty obvious but hadn't yet considered using one.

That's exactly the sort of stuff I love, but you have way more expertise than I do. Trying to decipher the story behind the treasure to help find it! Sorta what I do with tax records and city directories, but yours is way more detailed! Nice skill!

Thanks! Preliminary detecting today turned up a ring off a horse bit, 3 tin cans, a handful of square nails, and a long 45 caliber centerfire casing. Nothing tempting. Several of the finds were a foot or more down, so the trash is at least that deep. Nothing below that, but that's probably due to the limits of the detector.

I had a brief career in geology/paleo including several publications. Unfortunately academia doesn't pay and you don't get to do anything fun until you're about 60.

I am working on a novel, but it will suck. Autists can't write characters so we have to write ideas. Rand is a good example. Her novels are absolute shit but her ideas are good.

I dunno, the way we do it is closer to science than art. You're talking test pits and stratigraphy, and interpreting behavior from the location of artifacts. That's straight up archeology with emphasis on forensics.

My primary interest is the material culture of the Victorian frontier miners and their families as it indicates technologies and practices.

My secondary interest and probably yours too is the history of various businesses as indicated and dated by their artifacts.

I told you about my friend who's working on a timeline of token manufacture in my area based on die cracks, cuds, and wear. We can then turn around and use his guide to date tokens which have no good historic attributions.

I think you'd really love one of my ghost towns. This place was built in 1860 and declared abandoned by 1875. Then the mines boomed up again in 1899 and the town was rebuilt and occupied up into the 1950's. They threw their trash out on the hillside, so the newer town has layers of trash over 6 feet deep. But you dig down below that extremely fat layer and you hit a layer of clay soil. Under that is another few feet of EVEN OLDER bottles and waste. It's a spectacular place to screen. The outhouses have all been dug up, but the middens are mostly virgin with a few test trenches at best here and there. I've found bottles there dating from the 1850's right up to the 1930's and everything in between. Absolute digger's paradise. It regularly turns up coins and tokens as well. There was a row of almost a dozen saloons and whorehouses that operated for decades. Thick middens of shit and ash full of bones and buttons and marbles and combs and all sorts of glass and crockery. The deepest layer is almost untouched. I know of the buried town because of research and digging, but most diggers have no idea it's even there.

Bathtubs are also missing. Either they didn't have them or they took them with when they moved. Probably didn't have them because other heavy stuff like wood and coal stoves were abandoned all over the place

Silver and gold coins were incredibly rare, or not often lost. Usually if someone finds a silver or gold coin it's at the bottom of an outhouse pit where the owner wouldn't go digging for it.

every miner either stole metals from their employer or prospected on the side, so little bits of melted silver and gold can be found all around the mining camps. Sometimes big bits.

If there were to be a return to a similar silver:salary ratio as the 1860s-1910s, silver would either need to be ~$108, or the average salary would need to drop to ~$19,000.

The best price to ever buy silver in the history of man was the year 2000, where the average US salary was $32,971, and the average price of silver was $4.6/ozt. This equates to about ~7100 ozt of silver if you converted your entire salary into silver.
To be in the top 1% of silver wealth, you would need to own around 367ozt of silver (spreadsheet in next post).

I don't disagree with the sentiment of investing into short-term profitable markets. (Even if you hate fiat currency, would it not be advantageous to make a short-term profit to then purchase more silver?)
But with that aside, I don't think that it's insane to believe that we will see a great increase in silver price as supply cannot fufill its demand.

Of course, they're fantastic for barter. Thats why copper has been used throughout history as part of sound monetary systems. Although, copper pennies in the past were much larger. I was just saying there's a very easy exit strategy for them through a local sale on CL, FBMP, or even the right LCS or pawn shop. I keep my copper pennies in a jar, but I also keep all my spare nickels. They're currently worth about 6c/piece which is an instant 20% profit.

Besides reactivity of the contents I guess it depends where the seams were and what kind of tinning the interior got. I do know that in the 1890s in some big cities with more sophisticated waste management they had giant rotating perforated drums they'd load with tin(ned) cans and heat to melt and recover the lead/tin solder and tin coating, apparently enough was used in cans back then that at scale it was at least claimed to be economical.

Yeah I can't imagine lead exposure was a problem when they were putting the stuff in wine as a sweetener and in cosmetics and paints. Then there were the mines themselves, which were and still are full of lead dust and rock. The smelters raining oxidized lead ash down on everyone day and night so constantly that the EPA required us to remove the top 4 feet of soil over the entire town and ship it to HAZMAT dumps. Then there was all the shooting, and damn did those guys shoot a lot of lead. Civil war battlefields probably got less lead in them than the average boom town here. Almost forgot lead pipes and solder. My town used silver/lead for solder, so that's worth a bit of money when I find it, but the lead in water pipes and buckets probably wasn't great.

My guess is nobody was dying from the canned food. That was a pretty tiny source even if it would be considered huge today. As far as I know all a bit of lead poisoning does is make you dumber, and the way those guys acted they weren't exactly geniuses or anything.

That's interesting! Up here the tin is long gone, but there's anything from a quarter to half an ounce of lead left on the cans typically. I don't recover them for lead because I think they're cool artifacts, but there's probably a few thousand dollars worth of lead solder sitting in can dumps around my town.

just speculation, but they went heavy on the solder from what I've seen.

your graphic makes an important point about oxidation and bioavailability. To make lead toxic you about have to turn it into dust so your body can attack it with acids, or you have to expose it to acid.

otherwise it doesn't do much. Even eating the stuff in chunks doesn't give enough surface area to cause serious harm. It needs to be turned into a powder and exposed to acids. Or in our case, evaporated in furnaces and distributed as smoke over thousands of people.

The water system in my town was built in 1879. Old silver town. The original pipes were wood slats with iron bands, soldered together with silver. Several miles of that old wood pipe with silver solder still sits buried under the town 145 years later. Some of it is still in use.

Not sure what it's worth, but when silver moons I'd bet someone digs it all up and cashes it in. Gotta be a few hundred pounds of silver. I'd guess any silver plumbing would be the same. Somebody will dig it up.

Agreed, and your point touches upon an aspect of the cucked modern world that kinda bothers me. Basically everyone is brainwashed from early childhood onward to be deathly afraid of lead, or CFCs, or DDT, or the wondrous mineral Asbestos. Thanks to sophisticated propaganda campaigns multiple generations now have passed down to their children irrational and ignorant phobias without also educating anyone about safe handling and the many applications where they are still the absolute best materials known to man. Felt comfy feels when I rediscovered this NOS box of asbestos wicking while going through some stuff in storage, got some old DDT on hand for a rainy day too.

ah yeah, I'm friends with the guy that runs the water company here so I have the inside deets

so we have a 5 foot diameter main that runs half a mile from the reservoir to the chlorination plant. Then 3 foot into town about a mile, and a couple miles of 2 foot mains in town. From there it dropped down below a foot. Most of the stuff isn't still in use, but it's still underground.

The pipe is mostly wood and iron, but the solder held bands together and spliced pipe ends, of which there were lots. Thousands.

The silver used was mill-run dore for the time which was about 80% silver. Interesting thing, some of it was found as ore when they were digging the reservoir itself. It's located right behind one of the richest silver mines in the world. Like a hundred yards behind. It's crazy.

totally agree but I have to run off tonight. This is a convo for another day.

I'm an enviro contractor, this stuff is exactly what I spend years in school learning about and getting paid to deal with. Most of it is bullshit. I have mercury, lead, asbestos, and tons of other interesting hazards around my house. Education is key and as you say, everyone is just taught to avoid and fear. All those things have uses, and people use them daily.
