Yeah but they were badly designed. Vast majority of German tanks were petrol, that's why they had to run the engines all the time during the winter months in Russia just to keep them from freezing up but at least they didn't just go up in flames at the drop of a hat.

Firstly, it was the ammo placement that was the reason for most fires
Second, Sherman had equal rates of fires to contemporary tanks (Pv IV and T-34), and then they designed the "wet ammo rack" which severely reduced fires to rates lower than contemporary vehicles.

Also, if you see an enemy, you can just jump off.
Did you ever sit in an APC? They are horrible. You are locked into them and if someone is shooting at you, you can just pray and hope that you won't burn to death in an steel cage or get locked in there forever.
Soldiers would rather take the risk of getting shot by an assault rifle than that.
