Land, property, taxes, zoning laws make recreating this in America insanely difficult. Giving most people a house would instantly make them bankrupt. It doesn't cost as much to provide a basic house with plumbing and electricity in third world countries.

There's a cost/profit ratio.
What is going to keep the advertising revenue coming in long-term? That's the "profit". Clicks on recent and old videos.
It's not exactly about logic as it is about generating empathy.
Point is, a 1000 gift cards is less personalized than doing something for one person.
If he spends less, it looks like he's a cheapskate. A million, on the other hand, looks impressive.
