Are you super sure about that? My mother has been in genealogy for 30 years and a lot of people get false information or find names etc that aren't really the case and just roll with it down the wrong path from like 3 gens back.

The whole DIY of genealogy seems to be a bunch of people just perpetually lying to themselves

My family is catholic and the church has done record keeping as far back as that of births (baptisms) and marriages, and it aligns oral history, thats research on my end, but two sides of the family paid for proper genealogical research and their information matches mine.

My mom got obsessed with genealogy for years, so way back. Can even name some ancient Roman ancestors of mine. Going back further, my family has a legendary family tree that supposedly ties us back to the Pharaohs and then all the way back to Adam and Eve. Not something to take that seriously, but it's cool.

idk, I suppose I have ancestry from 4 different continents, and the most recent "pure" or isolated ancestry must be Syrian/Lebanese

My parents have been researching our genealogy my whole life, even going to the Mormon records in Salt Lake City and getting DNA tests. My dad traced his ancestors back to the eighty years war of early 17th century Netherlands. No record of our last name existing before then because before that point we were serfs. My mom traced her genealogy to early 17th century England, descendants of the barber family that were some of the first pilgrim settlers of Connecticut. Possibly came to avoid staying longer in debtors prison. The Irish part of my family had been in America since around 1900.

Going further back than 1200 AD is seen as quite silly by real genealogy buffs. If you go back that far, most of England is descended from king John, most of Asia is descended from genghis khan, etc. due to the population multiplying exponentially over the last 800 years. You also shouldn’t really take anything more than 3rd cousins very seriously because the number of 4th cousins you have could be crazy.
