What really made it take off was the haganaiFags and the yozoraFags vs SenaFags.
That show in particular, was basically soft core pornography.
I think all anime before that mostly had a cartoon feeling.
Haganai ended up being like a huge gateway drug of sorts for the men of that time.
This led to a huge spike in interest in hentai.
Coupled with the fact most women are obese or down right fucking ugly, the 2D world became more appealing.
This was also during the height of the MGTOW movement.
After seeing plenty of tits IRL, and realizing that most women's tits look like flappy deflated saggy loose skin, meanwhile anime girls tits are always perky, always perfectly proportional, you just end up searching for more.
It also doesn't help, that most anime characters are draw females at their peak age (around 15).
Their personalities I am not too fond of, but the 2D personality is superior to most 3D personalities.
Further, with kancolle and other gacha anime girl games taking off, more men just got more and more use to seeing females drawn to ideal proportions.
It's all unrealistic, but society has also become so unreal that people (men) are fine with anime girls.
