Since i wasn't allowed to shitpost, i was forced to be productive (yikes) out of boredom, and i made quite the great deals out there. Some stuff Scrapfren would be proud of i'm sure.
Few of them ended up being fake trashes, but now i've got the eye, so i got refunds on each of them, and for the rest is was big bux wins. Flipped some, kept some.

As starter this beautiful silber 20 Lire 1936. Ultra limited mintage, i think it was to celebrate the 15th Bday of italian fascism in power.

An even older one : 1 colonial Sol 1767. Initially it was minted by the french monarchy for the caraibes' colonies, but they almost all ended up in your west coast, as there were big coinage shortages. It was valued as 1 Cent = 1 Sol since their copper weight were close enough.
This one was counterstamped RF (French Republic) few decades later, once the monarchy was put down.

A giga rare 1/2 silber Thaler from Regensburg, 1754. Only 1.200 minted total. Sadly mine was used as pendant at some point, but i paid such ridiculously low price it's all good. Still have crisp details.

OK this one will please you because it has a super story.
It's a 2 Sol 1793, minted by the french army during the siege of Mayence, in Germany. They melted down the bronze of the churches' bells to cast those (a revolutionary's tradition).
Back then the revolutionaires recently chopped off Louis XVI's head, and basically all monarchies in Europe declared war to France, in order to help the nobility to set back up a king on the throne.
It was called the Coalition (basically the whole of Europe). It was expected the french army would collapse and be destroyed almost immediately, as they were already dealing with the bloodiest civil war ever + loyalist insurrections from within their ranks.

But to the general surprise, France BTFO'd everybody. Austria, Spain, UK, Prussia, etc.. one after another, then all at once. Back then our army was something else, frogs never backed down.
Since we won every battle, our generals fell a bit too cocky and started to invade our neighbors -starting with Germany- with what was left or our bled out ranks. With for goal to bring the republic into other monarchies.
Ofc it didn't take long before the exhaustion and no supply line stalled the advances. But instead of backing down, the frog army decided to capture german cities and make year's long sieges.

This coin was from the one in Mayence. 4.000 total were minted. The condition is truly astonishing.

One oddity i got and i've no clue how to price it.
It's an italian 10 Centesimi 1866 minted "inside-out".
Everything is backward and incused instead of being raised. I don't even know how can this kind of mint fuck up even happen lol.
I searched throughly but i couldn't find anything, i think (well, i hope) i may have an unique mint error on my hands.
It's slightly heavier than a normal 10 cent, but with similar dimensions.

Anyway check this silver tripleboobas I just bought an hour ago, I've been looking for one at the right price and condition for 6 months. Not cheap, but such succulence is totally worth it.

Damn, I've never owned one of those. Looks like some planchet irregularities and/or some weakness of the strike may make the reverse look more worn than it is so I figure it's a solid Good-06, with pretty nice surfaces and an attractive obverse. I bet you could get $300+ for it really easily, those liberty cap cents are *extremely* popular with burgerlard collectors and are guaranteed to inspire jellyness.

Have you heard of "brockage" errors, where a coin gets stuck in one of the dies of the coining press and then gets smashed into the next fresh planchet that gets fed in? We'd need an accurate weight and measurements but if it's not just something a bored dude made by sandwiching coins in a vice it could be pretty special. What is the orientation/alignment of the obverse and reverse, does it match a normally struck 10 centesimi?

They're the "exception that proves the rule" about boomers being greedy turds, it's beautiful how honest, kind and charitable they are so I'm very blessed. I'll send you more details/info privately so you can see what I mean.

I always thought it was crazy how they'd sell so much foreign silver coinage (and silverware/jewelry) for exactly melt value; worn colonial Spanish reales, big windmill reichsmarks, Canadian 5 cent fishscales and innumerable other goodies along with grubby but nice cleanable US silver dollars as gravy on top. Never made sense, but my dad and I were happy to feast upon the cheapies.

Turns out the problem is that they are(were) simply too damn busy to research or try getting a fair price; their buy/sell spreads are narrower than any other shop I've ever seen so they're hands-down the most beloved and trusted coin shop and gold/silver buyer and dealer for hours in any direction which means they're constantly swamped with business. They know that they're letting good stuff go far too cheap, but it's because they have to triage and focus on whatever generates the most income locally. Listing and shipping $50 foreign coins online is worthwhile for every other dealer because they hardly get any business in comparison, but my LCS *always* has customers all day, often lines of them with a wait time even with the 3 of us all attending to people so they don't have the time to research or sell stuff properly, and that's where I come in! Besides my experience with routine gold and silver bullion/constitutional and scrap I have a keen eye for the arcane weird things that the owners aren't familiar with and bring valuable insight into how and where to sell. I've been pulling from dusty corners and selling many thousands worth of that unusual forgotten inventory that they truly knew nothing about and were at risk of selling for peanuts, so they are as happy as I am about me joining the team

Anyway check out this load the shop sold to me for $50 flat. I doubled the size of my hometown token collection, got a bunch of big coppers and tiny silvers, and added plenty other interesting pieces including a few old contemporary counterfeits (a c.1800 brass $5 and a copper Spanish 4 real) to the collection. The silver melt value alone is nearly double what they charged and there are several coins worth a decent numismatic premium but they treat me well, I love working at the coin shop so goddamn much lol.

I just got into stacking last year myself, don't have any coins of that calibre quite yet but I do have a few things I like, such as picrel (got that last year at braderie de lille for under spot) looks like a cup but I'm not sure it is one, with the handle on it, but no idea what else it could be used for.

I've also been looking at getting a Libertas french indochina coin, (got mail for one from ebay today, it's a fake), a windmill coin, a mexican 1948 5 pesos cuauhtemoc and a bunch of historical locally minted coins (gauls, medieval, 20th century strips among other things), one of which, as far as I looked on the internet, only exists in the archives of the BnF in two specimens, even contacted them about it, not much more info.

But yeah, I've been having a lot of fun, definitely a cool hobby.

If you don't really have a specific gainful use or need for the building in mind and also aren't planning on flipping the property then why do you want to swap your gold for something with tax liabilities, maintenance costs and exposure to downside CRE market risk? Insider knowledge of planned development in the area that'll juice up value in the neighborhood? If it is indeed structurally sound and way under the local market price in a stable and liquid area I think most would agree that flipping quick and getting more gold would carry the least risk.

Yeah I saw but it wasn't clear what you were talking about regarding Armenians and .840. Regarding age I'm leaning towards it being newer, roughly post-1950. It's very heavy for something so small which would make it relatively stable if it was used as a toothpick holder, I like nice thick gauge silver that won't get dented if you breathe on it too hard. I'm sure it'll be a good bucket for the stack of gold 20 Francs i see in your future!

I'll sauce you will all that, now i have a precision electronic caliper, it is a very useful tool, i use it all the time. I'd be surprised if it is just a troll, because it's from a serious seller i often buy from who own incredible oddities (often too expensive for my tastes sadly).

Personally i think i'd play dumb in this scenario, and my justification would be that with internet availible anytime anywhere, if you let slip valuables you can only blame yourself for your lazyness. Very nice. This bunch of Canadian's 5 cents alone would justify the price!
And here you have so many goodies, silber peso, centavos, sen, pfennig, cash, schilling, para,... but those tokens are completely foreign to me, do they hold nice value like the saloon tokens bobbro enjoy?
Here we got loads of necessity tokens from the XIXth-XXth, often in alu/brass/nickel, but the vast majority of them aren't worth more than a bux, the exception being the tokens from colonies, who can reach up to 70-80€ in nice condition.

Too bad those counterstamped 40 Reis are very worn down because they too can fetch a nice price.
Is it a worn down mexican 1/2 real from Carlos IV i see, right to the 20 pfennig? And what is the coin left to the 100 yen? It's too dark for me to read, but the design remind me of some danish skilling, maybe from Christian VII.
Anyway that's a treat for a numisfag to get bonuses in "nature" i bet kek! Ngl i'm kinda jelly.

It's a recipient for a tea making ensemble, look at "passe-thé" in french. Tea was very ritualized in the ottoman/western/eastern parts of the world among the bourgeoisie, they got all kind of strainers, cups, spoons, kettles, etc... back during the XVIIIth-XIXth c.

Yes indochinese french colonial coinage is among the most faked, because it's very popular here and in Asia too. Thankfully the fakes are very easy to detect because their quality is cringe inducingly bad. Be very careful, and if you have any doubt, request a refund.
The minimum starting pack for numismatic is a precision scale, a precision caliper and a jeweler loupe. It will cost you 20 bux total on amazon, or even less on alibaba, and it will be proven unvaluable very fast. Because it will back up your intuition when you have a doubt and make it clear when it's fake.

You'll have surprises you couldn't imagine if you continue in your path. I've got several coins from my ebay slurps who ended up in museums (Copenhagen, Vilnus,..).
Some who get used as the new tag for a coin in catalogue. Here a story from last week. While doing some clean up, i found back a lot of old vatican tiny copper coins i got back in January for 30 bux but couldn't be bothered identifying the most damaged ones.
I decided to give it a second try, but one of which was so crappy and so tiny i was tempted to bin it. But by chance i found a Vatican catalogue "Corpus Italiarum Whateverum vol XXXVII" and finally found a ref. No idea how to price it, there is no examplar on sale anywhere in the world, so as a joke i put a 300€ pricetag. I shit you not, within few hours an american specialist bought it. Pic rel. Half a gram of copper. 300€.

I did know about that beforehand, I was fooled by a soon-to-end auction at a very low price, I sent a message to the seller to see if we can resolve this amicably, and if not I'm going through ebay

I have a scale and a loupe, got them last month, no caliper at home but there is an electronic one I can use at work for now, it makes do, I also have a magnet, that piastre was 20 something grammes and magnetic, so pretty obvious once tested, but my amateur eye didn't see through the fake on the listing

That's a good question. I've no idea, i didn't do the proper digging yet. The square with two opposite raised segments reminded me of the dioboles minted in Cardia back around -500/-400. I should mail the seller, i already discussed few times with him and he is pretty knowledgeable, so hopefully he can sauce me up. I simply fell in love with the level of details on the coin and didn't think twice about it : i just wanted it lol!
I've got another one from Massalia with gorgeous details i wanted to show you i acquired recently, but i can't find back the pics i took :(

Yeah I wasn't suggesting that it was a modern creation and I'm sure the seller had nothing to do with it. Over the years I've seen things like mutilated US quarters, small and large cents etc. that were sandwiched between other contemporary or more recent coins that were current when made by a bored dude in a powerful vise. I just saw a cool large cent from 1853 that was pretty worn which had a minty 1904 Indian penny and crisp 1907 V nickel pressed into each side, it transferred a remarkable amount of detail so you could pretty clearly assess the grade of the other coins just before they got ruined. That 10 centesimi looks really good and uniform so I think it's quite possible that you have a very dramatic (and reasonably valuable) legit brockage error coin. Normally brockages only have 1 side that is incuse/mirrored so yours is worth getting authenticated and graded if it seems legit. I suspect that the collar which centered the planchets on the minting press and kept the diameter uniform might not have functioned right if both dies had a full planchet stuck to them, so i wouldn't be surprised if the diameter is slightly wider than a normal 10 cent. I'll need to address your other comments later but wanted to share that before going to bed. Please post those measurements (and pics of the Massalia coin) when you can, you've definitely piqued my interest with yet another cool mystery. G'nite frogfren!

Upon closer inspection, here is what i gathered :

I've always wondered how tiny is the pool of ppl interested with those, because it's often the coins with the lowest premiums (often negative) you can find on the secondary market, even though the purity is very high in most cases, and the mintage quite limited.
I always thought as something granmas buy (at a huge mark up) when it get released by governments, then everybody forget about it 6 months later.

Yes. You hit the nail on the head. They're generally low mintage, high retail premiums, 999 or 925, and often in irregular sizes. Usually poorly marked or not marked at all. They can be found to sell well under spot. Having the skills and tools to research these pieces is a small edge I have over most Boomers.

Thanks very much for the specs frogbro, I did some browsing on eBay and acsearch for actual weights of 1866 10 centesimis and didn't see anything over 10.3g, I'm sure they cut blanks from thick stock and coined heavy planchets occasionally but being 10.9g in spite of the circulation wear is sus. I'll mull it over and get back to you if I figure anything out

That's definitely a good angle, I've seen lots of vintage "Franklin Mint" crap and 1960s-70s art medals and medallions sell for a fraction of melt value because the markings on some sets are microscopic or are only on the rims making them invisible to someone just looking at the faces. I don't want to state publicly which sets are most frequently sold cheap because of those issues but it seems like you have a good idea already, keep up the savvy slurping anon!

The remaining splotches like the one above his head indicate to me that it probably looked like shit and was bought cheap so they could dip'n'flip it for several times what they paid. I received a bunch of old kopecks from a lot. Everything looked nice & dandy, but then i weighted this 10 kopecks 1837. And it came up at 33.5g instead of 45.5g!

I know ruskies and precisions weren't going along too well back then. I've got 5 Kopecks from Catherine II ranging very wildely in weight, like 20g difference between 2 of them... but it was back in the 1760s.
Do you know if vodka induced weight spread was still a thing during Nicolas I reign?

I'm not an ancient kopecks' expert, but i've handled my fair share of those this year. My intuition and feels tells me this is a genuine coin. The touch, the wear, the details, the patina... i didn't notice anything wrong going with the coin at first glance. The diameter is matching too.
Am i worrying over nothing bro? Since i know you love those old big bois, did you too witnessed such weight disparities among the ones you own?

Kek, no I don't yet have any personal experience with big coppers from after Catherine The Great but I'm absolutely certain that Russia and the Russians living there were just as whimsically dysfunctional in the 1830s as they were in the 1790s, so seeing the same ridiculously vast divergence from the theoretical standard weight in Nicholas' coppers too is probably perfectly normal. It looks completely legit to me so I wouldn't worry at all about it fren, it's a nice beefyboi that would find a good home in any respectable copperchad's stack

Man you're really cleaning up over there, the European coin market is so much softer and less competitive (or more discombobulated and harder to navigate) than it is in the Anglosphere so keep in mind that the arbitrage might not last forever and keep taking advantage of it while you can. For years back before covid I bought a prodigious amount of ancient European artifacts with the idea that someday most easily detected things would be found thus causing availability of fresh pieces to dry up, and also that the rise of nationalism and laws protecting cultural heritage would get stronger and more actively enforced making it much harder to get anything through customs on both ends. I instinctively knew that availability and access would progressively diminish over time but didn't predict how a catalyst like the global coof shutdowns would irrevocably cripple the supply-side of the market overnight. If I didn't obsessively hoard all that I could back when the gettin' was good I'd be a very frustrated and discouraged collector now so i'm very grateful for what I managed to acquire back then. Factors affecting the coin market will be different but I expect that a big one will be AI helping collectors effortlessly bypass language barriers which then will give the whole world access to the cheapies you still have mostly to yourself right now, so slurp hard and enjoy it as long as you can. Anyway, in the US it's much harder to get cheap numismatics online like you do in Europe, but we clearly have a lot more cheap scrap available. Old coins are way more interesting than most spoons and candle holders tho so from my position your grass looks enviously green lol, keep it up fren.

I don't know where you have been in the last decades, but basically:
1) women are running rampant and destroying society from a reproduction perspective. Too many single mothers (that raise criminals), too many childless women and too many women focusing on school/work.
2) hedonism and degeneracy are also running rampant without any constrain
3) central banks are printing money like crazy and the inflation we see today is nothing compared to what await us
4) conflicts are erupting around the globe, either internal conflict or between nations
5) a good portion of the population (I estimate 50%+) got fatally poisoned with the convid shot and even tho it is a slow acting poison people keep dropping dead here and there, sooner or later the numbers will add up and show the consequences. (To go back to point 1, most women took that crap)

It's good to hope for the best, but if today you are not prepared for the worst, you are in for a wild wild ride, everything points at disaster

Hey Big Bob, hopefully you're lurking because I came across a token hoard you'd probably find interesting.

They're all from an early 1910s bar/saloon in the Midwest, the town had nearly 15,000 residents back then but is down to about 12,500 now.

On Tokencatalog.com there are only 2 versions listed, the small brass 5c which was evidently unlisted in the go-to printed 1983 reference book for the region and a listing for the scalloped aluminum 5c that I believe was in the printed book but which Tokencatalog still needs a picture of. Amusingly I only found 1 of each of the known tokens.

All the others are apparently unknown, there are 17 5c round aluminum, 18 and 27 25c brass tokens with distinctly different text arrangements on the obverse dies, and a whopping 33 of the big 50 cent tokens! I'm certain that a hoard full of unusually high denominations could only have been in the possession of the proprietor and that for some reason they got passed down through the family for 100 years instead of being sent to the town dump after prohibition killed the business.

Since my job is to get the most I can for them I'll be shrewd and only list for auction 1 of each *Rare Unlisted* type and see what the interest and bidding activity looks like. I'd be surprised if there are more than 4 or 5 collectors in the whole country who would care about them at any given time so whether or not they sell high I'll probably need to wait at least 4-6 months before listing any more. It's likely a situation where the first few tokens would yield more than the 15-30 remaining ones combined if I flood the market so I guess I gotta meter 'em out slowly over the next 20 years like The Chosen do with their diamonds, should be fun lol.

If i get such slurps lately it's thanks to a post you made a while back, where you were soft-reeing at getting shortcut by buyers who negociate with the sellers before the auction ends.
I started doing this pretty aggressively few weeks back for the lots i really wanted, and it's yelding great -really great- results so far.
Sellers knows most ppl will bid at the last second, but most can't resist the feel of security coming with getting handed a fixed amount of cash. They probably all have been burned at least once with an auction going invisible and getting only a ridicule fraction of the worth.

If i estimate a lot will go to $400 and the auction still is fresh (with a $10 max bid for ex.) i directly propose a $200 in direct purchase, but only if they create a double of the current auction, but with the title in the description, and add the "make an offer" button. Once i pay they have to delete the first, public auction with bets on.
So far only one guy didn't accept my offers.

It felt super sharky to do this at first, but the more i slurp, the more aggressive and bloodthirsty i get.
I fear i am transforming a bit into (((them)))... But i can't resist a good deal bro...

Just a batch that walked in and was sold to the shop, the set buy price is 3 cents each for new stuff like car wash and arcade tokens and 50 cents each for old trade tokens like those. Chasing numismatics specifically? Not very long, about a year or so.

In truth not really. I mean there is no magic trick. Find the good keywords and scroll down on ebay's coins section, that's about it. Over time the experience will naturally train your eye to identify the potentially good stuff. A bit more time will train you to find your own formula to be more efficient at it (less time wasted looking at worthless stuff your eye will manage to automatically brain zap after a while).

At first it's a bit wind-broken because each time you see a coin you don't know about (which is 100% of the coins when you begin), you have to alt-tab to look at what it is and check how much it's worth (often nothing). It's pretty depressing at first when you individually check a lot of x100 coins and none is worth even 1 bux.
At some point to avoid that i spent days straight looking at coins' catalogues and memorizing (via hand-copying several times) the key dates and mints so it become natural to spot them when i scroll down big lots.
But you don't have to go full autismo as starter.

Just casually scroll down the "money of the world" section without any key word and simply enjoy scrolling down to nice looking coins. If you don't enjoy looking at coins it will be a deal breaker.

One big tip i can give you is to purchase a logictech G-502 mouse. 11 extra buttons to which you can each dedicate a macro. It literally saved me weeks of tiny time saves repeated thousands of times each day.
For example i have Ctrl+C allocated on my push-left scroll, Ctrl+P on my push-right scroll, Ctrl+X on my middle-button scroll, Lock-maj on the thumb button n°3, next page/previous page on thumb n°1 & 2, etc..
Actually, whatever you decide to do, you should buy this mouse kek.

Fuggin' exquisite, might be AU in which case it alone would more than pay for everything, there are a bunch of varieties of the 1832 5c so if it's a rare one it'll be worth multiples over an already impressive price. Those early 1917(?) and 1918 merc dimes are unusually nice too and superior to normal circulated "constitutional" so be sure to check the mint marks and look up what they sell for in higher grades. Spectacular work man $200 is peanuts for so much quality, I wouldn't be surprised if you make $1000 without even trying.

By what metrics?
Plus nothing is safe from manipulation, especially in a world where endless derivatives & futures are authorized financial weapons.
If anything, the very large market cap + worldwide distribution of gold make it quite stable and resilient against manipulation outside of paper shenanigans.
And you could even argue : would governments ever want to use currencies who can't be manipulated? I don't believe so.

I also learned that Sales tax in tranniefornia is not imposed on sales over $2k. The man behind the counter said last year it was $1500. I never read this on jmbullion/apmex/sdbullion etc. so it was news to me. Those sites only gave a list of which states do collect sales tax. It's when i try to take photos with my phone the loupe is doing the opposite of what it should.

It's just some chink crap i got for 30 bux, but beside the phone clowning me, i'm pretty happy about it, the LED are very bright, the base is heavy so i can move the flexible arm freely and it stays up.

You're thinking in dollar normative terms. Gold fluctuates vs dollar because there's a gold futures market where people bring leveraged dollars in and out of the gold market depending on perceived best dollar return. If the currency is gold, the future price of gold is just bond rates.

I tried every distance, the closer i get from the loupe, the tinier the item. But the further i go... the further i am from the item, so it's still tiny kek.

Gripe I have with ebay, at least on the french side, a -lot- of people start their listing with a reserve price that's way higher than the hammer price they would get if anyone did bid, so no one does, and they're common coins, so it's a whole lot of listings that are a waste of time. Did see a cool listing a few days ago (I think it was posted years ago), but the seller seems to have gone inactive, I sent them a message and waiting for an answer with not much hope.

I won ebay auctions for some two tibetan mohar coins, listing was about to end so I had to hurry and try to figure out if they could be real or not, I think there's a chance, I'll give an update when they get here (the listing pictures had some kind of AI filter on them, guy probably hasn't noticed that's a thing on his phone).

Thanks for the advice, that's surely the best way to avoid killing the market. I was browsing on Worthpoint looking at tokens from all over the country and saw an interesting case where someone must've found an uncirculated little hoard of identical saloon tokens that they started selling slowly about 10 years ago, listing 1 every 6-18 months (about a year apart on average) The first 2 sold for over $500 each but some of the more recent ones hammered between $40-70, I think that gives a good idea of how many truly serious collectors wanted that particular token, and I wouldn't be surprised if the guys who paid top dollar have been engaging in a warped version of dollar-cost averaging and soaking up some of those cheaper duplicates too.

Yeah it's genuine and while I can tell it is from the Canterbury mint I dunno how to differentiate between the different Edwards, it should be perfectly identifiable to people who specialize in medieval English pennies though.

Yeah I'd be very interested in one, whichever is the least valuable as I don't intend to focus my autism on Congoid coinage but would certainly appreciate some additional relics from there to muse over.

The 3c nickels are popular coins among burger collectors too, IIRC the earlier 3 cent silvers (which were never popular at the time) were issued to be a more compact and convenient way to pay for letter mail stamps than large cents after the cost of a stamp was reduced from 5 to 3 cents, and the later nickel 3c coins were approved as a replacement for our despised paper fractional currency bills. Letter mail rates were lowered again to 2 cents in the 1880s so whatever flimsy reason to exist those coins once had was lost and they quickly disappeared from circulation, with many being melted down.

That's exactly how I got into token dealing and wound up owning most of the tokens from my town at various times.
Not greed, I just hated seeing a token I paid hundreds for going for a fraction of the price
So I snapped up the excess inventory and sold to keep prices up
