Emulators aren't slowing down, mame just recently went open source, there are 360 and ps3 emulators in the works, citra and that wiiu emulator exists.
Gaming consoles are what's dying, the Japanese market can't sustain itself with everyone simply too busy for playing anything but smartphone games even the hardcore Japanese gamers are now moving to pc and the games are now getting steam releases. Nintendo's greatest hits were smartphone games. Microsoft is the only one still in that business and then they release everything on the Xbox one on pc too.
PC gaming is the one thing closest to being in a golden era right now, but even then there's shit like Windows 10 and every game looking like plastic and the 0.7% performance improvements in gaming hardware.
