You know... Maybe we are not getting a classic recession after all. Maybe commodities and commodity stocks will pump. Maybe I should buy copper & oil stocks after all on top of all the gold exposure. Some of these gold, copper and oil stocks have insane margins and very low valuations. There are a couple companies I really would like to have in my portfolio. Good copper companies usually pay a decent dividend so being too early is less of a worry. We might see some more m&a as well if the price takes a short-term beating. Seems pretty clear the majors are all trying to increase their copper portfolios.

it's just the speculator/trader in me that hates buying a top that is nagging me about whether I should buy or wait. The investor in me is drooling though. Oil and copper tend to be very exposed to recessions so the thought of buying and then getting smacked by -30~60% just sucks donkey dick. But man... some QUALITY oil stocks are trading at like 10% FCF yield, some QUALITY copper stocks paying >5% dividend yields with a low payout ratios, all of these QUALITY companies with very strong margins and balance sheets. The value is insane.

US SPR Replenishments Extend into 2025. With WTI prices trending around $76-77 per barrel, the US Department of Energy announced a tender to buy 3.5 million barrels of oil for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, to be delivered in January 2025 into the Bayou Choctaw and Bryan Mound storage sites.

out of curiosity, why junior oilcos when you can get insane value and duration for cheap with the majors? When quality is going for a discount, is there a point in trying to squeeze all the value in the more risky and lower margin juniors especially when recession risks are higher? Like, CNQ is trading at 10% FCF yield and are returning 100% of the FCF in dividends and buybacks, XOM is also yielding around 10% in FCF and they keep growing, plus they have a very diversified business on top. Arc Resources and Tourmaline in Canada are absolutely killing it every quarter, returning capital to shareholders and growing even though natty is weak. And so on. Is the potential for an extra 2x worth the risk when you get deals like these in the quality companies?

or actually Exxon's FCF yield is closer to like 6% but that's still pretty cheap for the world's biggest and one of the highest margin oil stocks with a strong growth pipeline.

I mean, best you can do with the majors is maybe 100% from here. Some juniors are down 50-70% and they could turn into x2, x3 maybe x5 at best if oil actually rallies (doubt it will go above $95 per bbl).
TL:DR higher risk higher reward.

PXT (no debt, nice divvie, just cheap but it's Colombia not much leverage to a higher price because tax is tied to the price of oil)
YGR (they've paid down quite a bit of debt currently around $90M, they plan to start a dividend at around $70M)
GXE (cheap company, good divvie, net cash position).
I filtered by sector on the TSX and looked at most of the oil juniors. There's others are I follow but I don't think they're buys anymore. Example GTE (they have a ton of debt and needed oil prices to stay high and they recently rallied over 100%). But the former three are the ones I'm looking at the most I think YGR has the highest potential reward, because of the financial leverage.

out of the junior oilcos I don't really look at many but I do like Spartan Delta as a more natty focused company. They are one of the few juniors that seem to be able to consistently increase shareholders' equity.

they disposed of some of their acreage for C$1.7B to Crescent Point (now called Veren) back in May 2023. They sold about 33kboe/d of about 50% liquids production. The acreage had about 300MMboe 2P reserves and $2.9B NPV10% at US$80/bbl oil. Spartan Delta paid an immediate $9.50/share special dividend and a share+warrant in a spinout company called Logan Energy which I haven't checked out yet.

The pre-disposition, pre-spinout SDE had achieved 80kboe/d production. This is all very compelling value creation from the management team, something like this is rare in the juniors in my experience.

Very rare. Nice dividend, that explains everything, I looked at the companies financial and couldn't figure out why it dropped 80%.

it's actually observable in the finances through shareholders' equity and in the investing portion of the cash flow statement. Anyway I really like quality. And if there's a junior company with a management team that's able to create value like this instead of destroying it like they usually do I pay attention. The only thing keeping me from investing in SDE so far has been natty weakness and recession concerns.

the problem with natty is that once it goes above US$3.50 every single E&P drills the hell out of all of their acreage because dry gas wells start getting insane IRR's when natty reaches that >$3 sweet spot. So with natty, premium market exposure and hedging discipline matter a lot.

I'm looking at SDE again now and they acquired a new underexplored asset close to their natty focused Deep Basin. Their Duvernay asset should be more liquids heavy at around 70% liquids which is a smart choice, and they're focusing on the liquids-rich parts of the Deep Basin. After doing their asset disposition they're now trying to consolidate the Deep Basin where they have good technical expertise. They're about 33% liquids right now and they're looking to increase the liquids weight it seems.

Spartan Delta also has some egress capacity to produce into and they're looking for more acreage to get more egress. This is again something I think juniors tend to struggle with so it's nice to see.

Man how bad is the Lithium market going to get? Most juniors down 90%, if you look at history they usually don't go lower than 98%. Seems like they're pretty close to a bottom.

we need to see some bankruptcies. Uranium market got bad enough that only a dozen juniors existed at one point. Probably won't get that bad for lithium but you get the idea. I would be much more interested in the established producers whenever I see signals that the bottom is in.

I get your point, but the environment seems different right now, since the bankers ballooned the money supply by $6T in 4 years. Still plenty of liquidity slushing around. China keeps cutting rates and it's the largest market for EVs. Also EU cutting and EMs are cutting as well (everyone but the US). I feel like It's going to bounce soon maybe not a bottom, but a bounce and bounces can be 70-100%. Although I think next week will be red for markets, lithium could rally past next week. Guess we will have to wait and see.

Or every G20 country starts cutting rates and the EV market picks up. Ton of companies in the sector get billions in loans and grants from the US government and there are subsidies on EVs around the world. Not saying It's a bottom, but It's time to start paying attention to the sector.

natty is an especially schitzo commodity. Literally swings up and down according to whichever way the wind blows. And no E&P wants to be the fall guy shutting in wells since they know the price will immediately go up once they capitulate, and they have guidance and delivery contracts to consider too. So it turns into a free-for-all where the weakest link loses and the rest live to see another day. Byproduct gas and the fact that oil wells get gassier over time also work against natgas bulls. Any smart natty producer would be hedging their production as much as possible above $3/mcf

Feel like he's way too bearish. The wells haven't been great, most were turning gassy in a couple months, but recently they've been getting some good results. With oil above ~$70 I don't see them being in trouble. The only major issue right now is the debt and they're working on it. With oil under $60 It could turn sour pretty quick.

he looks at a lot of companies in the sector and he's harsh where it's warranted. Very quality focused guy. But he has been wrong before too so best not take it as gospel.

I know almost everyone in the sector shits on this company, the wells were really bad for years, every well they drill would produce 100bbl/pd or something and go gassy within two months, they hit some 600-1000bbl/pd wells, but those usually dropped to 300bbl/pd also ended gassy in in a few months. It's not like they're doing much better with the wells right now, but there are signs of improvement. Sure the stock could go lower, but I'm don't think they're going out of business as long as oil remains at these prices.

Variable drilling results is the last thing the company needs that's for sure. Probably not going under while oil remains supportive agreed but I also can't say whether the company offers any compelling value aside from oil price upside optionality, which basically every E&P offers to begin with.

Idk if lithium was so abundant in oil fields, I'm not sure Rio Tinto would be trying to make this investment.
