really? because in this case the murderer was just killed in what is effectively cause and effect. there are lots of cultures where murderers get life in prison, and a lot of those cultures have a prison system exactly like ours.
the solution is simple.

>kill hostile criminals
they've already killed people. they're gonna do it again. if i kill you because you killed my friend, i'm not gonna kill again because my friend can't die twice. someone else would have to kill again, which just results in a requirement for punishment. this is called 'tying up loose ends'.
