it's a combination of edgy teenagers larping about shit they don't understand because it sounds cool, and propaganda created by people who needed an enemy to justify their actions.
there are no satanists running around having little cult meetings where they talk about cthulhu or whatever goth shit, and there are no alt right terrorists planning to shoot up the whole foods. these are just things that were made up by people who wanted to change the world in their image, got challenged by other people looking for justification, and so made something up.
