No automation was possible at the time beyond the simple guidence computer they did have. Modern automated flight controls in planes were all developed well after this. Theres a reason they were chosen from a pool of some of the best pilots in the world.
Early steps on the moon were very reserved, the jumping didnt come until they understood the surface and what they could manage. They did trip many times, lots of video of this. No rock could break those helmets with the moon’s gravity.
