Any music/guitar anons out there?

I used to play in high school (~ 3 years ago) and would like to pick it up again.

All I could play were simple songs that were only chord based and starting trying simpler songs. I want I get better and good. Any advice? I know a few scales but I'm that much of a music presión nor do I know how to effectly move across the neck. Any solid advice would be appreciated.

Been playing for 10 years now. Hands down the best advice I can give is to jam with as many different musicians that you can. The most I have ever learned about the guitar, and music in general, has been from playing with other musicians of equal or better skill level

I was an absolutely excellent pianist in college (~13 years ago) and kick myself a lot for letting the skill lapse. I didn't think much of it at the time so I didn't bother to keep practicing while life was getting shitty.

I'm getting my new piano moved in soon. I'm hoping I can get back to where I was in a year or two, but it'll likely take more like five. I'd been taking lessons since I was 9 and just completely walked away from it.

General advice: even if you don't get good enough to feel good about it, don't let it completely atrophy. I regret having neglected it so hard.

Hey man, late to the party but here are my thoughts. There are a lot of really talented people who learned a lot of songs but don't know how to improvise. I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum and imo improvisation is what separates the truly talented from the well studied. No matter what you need to study so learn yourself some standards. I started with the penatonic and got good at noodling and moved on from there. Tbh just practice practice practice and find what sounds good to you. Listen to a lot of guitar so you have an idea what direction you wanna go but most importantly come up with stuff you like. Like that e7 a lot? Experiment and find what goes good with it. It will take a long time but every time you improve you will love it more and the more you practice the more you will improve.

I'm pretty good, I suppose. But there's always more to learn. I mostly play technical metal and punk with my electric, and bluegrass/folk/ska/whatever on my acoustic. I play a few different instruments, too.

Then I would recommend learning how to read guitar tabs if you don't know already. Just look it up. It's super easy to learn. Then start learning songs from bands you like. That way your exposed to new techniques and ideas. I would highly recommend this for all beginners. Start with more simple songs that are at your skill level, and move up from there. And of course, practice. If you're passionate about music, practicing shouldn't be much of a chore

my biggest tip: record EVERY song you do, don't let any of it go to waste and fall into the void of nothing forever. a 4 track machine that works by recording onto blank cassettes is a good surefire way of never losing stuff you record, but a good one like a tascam portastudio can be a little pricey (like $100-200)

Second this, but with a caution. Improvisation is fun, and it's a crucial skill to have... but it's only easy when you have a good solid technical foundation to stand on. Learn the basics and study until it's as easy as breathing. Then just play and play and play.

Well I regret to too... I used to play piano as well and have a keayboard too. But I prefer guitar (and I'm kinda better)

I intend to pick up where I left off but it's kinda embarrassing being 21 and practicing again in my apartment...i used to play decently

that will help more than you think. It'll seem tedious but it's just the work you have to put in to be able to pull off impressive shit when it's time to play. Changing keys and stuff will be super easy if you've got the scales in your muscle memory.

That's what I've done, started with stuff I like that's simple and tried to go on from there. The problem is I have a bass and it's hard to find stuff for bass since it's all either super simple or super complicated.

OP if you can't find other people to play with I also recommend getting a looper and a metronome to practice with.

Everyone else I know is already a pro...
but you can bet after two months of practice I'll definitely try mixing it up with others
