This was never about the cats, it's about the fact that the cats give people a new line to scream "immigrants bad!".
Much of modern politics is people desperately looking for new GOTCHAs to use in debates have already gone in countless circles countless times over.
The debate over trannies is an example. There's nothing anybody on either side can say that the other will find convincing, but this only encourages people to try to come up with something that will. Which is how you get schizo tier takes like "Trannies are groomers because their flag has the colors pink and blue on it", or "Umm akshually biological sex doesn't even exist sweaty".
