Japs committed some of the most psychotic atrocities on the Chinese that we've seen in human history that were accepted societally on a large scale, equally large-scale annihilation in response would not be all that egregious.
Also, Americans were not evil whatsoever, but completely righteous actors in the entire WW2 conflict. In retrospect, between balancing the unprecedented horrors of the Axis Powers, the practical realities of realpolitik with our allies and fellow nations, the rising threat of the tyrannical Soviet Union and the need of scientific knowledge to combat them, and moral considerations, we danced along a delicate knife edge so deftly that it seems almost impossibly well-executed in retrospect.
