Reading the Bible is hugely overrated in American Protestantism. To the point where they treat the Bible as Muslims would the Koran, as some magical immutable record of the Word of God.
The Bible is a historical record of the origin of the Church. It serves as written memory for the Church, and it goes to explain what the Church thinks it is doing. But it does not replace the Church, nor is it a gotcha to go after minor contradictions in the gospels, as it is openly admitted that these are memories and letters written by humans decades after the events.
Once you treat it as historical record, it becomes extremely interesting, but you need to be into historical investigation and piecing together information from incomplete records, if you just treat it as magic you are just cargo-culting Christianity.

I would not start with the Bible per se, start with a modern synopsis or retelling, then go to the Bible, Stephen Mitchell did a version which I found inspirational and relatable, convincing me of the reality of Jesus

Yes, well, you see, it was a joke. There are actual jokes in the Bible, just not fart or poop jokes of the type you are familiar with, the humour is a little bit subtle.
The Jews had Jesus torture-killed by pretending towards their Roman overlords that he was trying to set himself up as rebel king. So they put "king of the Jews" on the sign to mock him. The gospels are full of passages suggesting how Christ came to redeem the Jews first and foremost, but as they rejected him they are now cursed and put last. By mocking him as "king of the Jews", they were also ironically cursing themselves and the actual irony is in the reversal of their ironical self-curse turning out to be an actual self-curse.
