Pic rel, in america, the taking down of confederate statues is perhaps conducive to natural unity, as there remains a path to the past through the yankees. Australia's identity is less concrete, and when we disavow our colonial past, we lose cohesiveness as a nation. "diversity is our strength", drinking and gambling, or even having good beaches, none of these are unique traits, and when our nation goes through crises, these aren't enough to form a national identity cohesive enough to be loyal to. We've lost our anglo unity of the 19th and 20th centuries, there remains little to connect us, we've become more or less an international hostel, and the powers that be (such as our government) don't feel any necessity to, and even at times oppose the search for an identity to the past. I truly worry for the future of my nation. We don't teach our history with any pride, even disdaining those who fought for our right to live here. It's common feeling to hate, decry, and exaggerate the malevolence of, those who came before us. Nothing good can come from such a feeling, but blindly copying american right wing cultural platitudes won't help us either. Maybe the next great tragedy will give us a generation who are forced to reform ties with one another. Everyone in the media should be fired (just cuz it's shit).
