You can do the same thing in the U.S. and you'll have travelled from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Same language, same foods, same races, same religion, same history.
It's not about the space, it's about the people inhabiting the space. New York and California may be on different ends of the country, and have slightly different accents, but in the end you're still Americans.
