>>21496067They're a representation of the general population, whether we like it or not. At least in America, where we have effectively become a democracy. Mainly because of universal suffrage and congress changing how we vote on issues.
It used to be only White men over the age of 21 that owned property could vote. Now it's almost anyone over the age of 18, and in many cases even including felons and migrants on "legal refugee status".
Also, Americans now vote for senators, which we didn't in the past. Our presidents still technically get voted on by state electors, not the general population, but let's stop the bullshit, we all know it's become a kabuki theater popularity contest at this point.
Democrats have also been pushing lately for getting rid of the electoral college completely and going to a direct democracy, which would ensure a republican never wins a national election ever again, because you would have the 3 biggest cities in each state determining the outcome for the entire state.
I live in Ohio and we have 88 counties. Sometimes our state swings blue and sometimes it swings red, but if you ever actually looked at the state from a county level, it's 95% republican. Usually 81+ counties go republican and only 7 or less go Democrat. But we've dwung democrat before because those 7 counties are all ghetto shithole cities and they get to control what the other 81 counties have to live with.
