>>21520981Ive only ever been taught "standard" ancient greek back in hs so I can't tell you about the other versions but the sentence structure and grammar is way different, however as far as vocabulary goes they're almost the same, basically all modern greek words have an ancient greek root word. Like gyne/γυνή is the ancient word, gynaika/γυναίκα is the modern word. So with some intuition you can understand a lot of what ancient texts are talking about, but you need to know the rules of the language and some extra tidbits to truly "grasp" it. I think schools do a bad job teaching the "rules" of the language so many kids struggle with it but it's super easy once you get the hang of it
I have always heard from literature teachers that people who want to learn greek have an easier time learning ancient greek first and then learning modern greek, and it actually takes them less time than just learning modern greek on its own, which always sounded interesting to me
