Things I've learned: a chainsaw makes it easy and quick, an ax is safer. If it isn't obvious where a tree is going to want to fall you better study it from every angle. Be ready to walk away from the tree and observe it. Eyes up. Clear everything near the tree so you can run anywhere if you need to. Know where every other tree is. This dude had another tree 25 feet away that he could have took cover behind and been fine. Instead he tried outrunning a 60 foot tree. Also, he was using a chainsaw but doing an ax type cut (best way to fell a tree with an ax is chop one side past the heartwood and then work on the little bit that remains on the other side. It works with an ax but it's suicide with a chainsaw)
Biggest one: if the tree is 90% cut and is looking sketchy take a long break and see if it will come down on its own. I've taken down about a dozen legit widowmakers (a widowmaker is: there's no longer any safe way to fell the tree)
