It's an affliction brought upon us by mass-media, television, movies - pretty much all forms of entertainment promote this self-centred view of the universe. Many people simply aren't capable of resisting such overwhelming propaganda. It takes effort and humility to live simply as a normal human being when you're a white westerner, because everyone else is playing god.
