They also liked the Glenn Miller Orchestra more than Beethoven. Classical music has always been niche. Even its hayday it was niche. This is why so many of them wrote lieds (songs). Anything to reach a larger audience. Part of the reason it has always been niche is the time to consume the larger pieces and the cost. It was from the beginning an elitist artform. And I say this as someone who loves it. It's also a very German and European artform. America doesn't have a lot to hang its hat on and even the composers who are from the states often work within the European style. It's not our artform. Jazz is ours, Country, Rock, the Blues, and yes Hip Hop.
