after the nukes they didn't necessarily get less nationalistic, but instead adopted "if you can't beat em, join em" mentality
anime is based because it (among other things) is the result of the japanese applying their aesthetic sense to 20th century american creativity/ingenuity/splendor, in an attempt to outdo us
same applies to a lot of japanese design n shit from that era
it eventually became its own thing though
