well it depends on the language you are using

I'd recommend not using an IDE(unless you want to go for java, Eclipse = Love/life)
, but rather a text editor like Sublime Text

What is wrong with using an IDE? Once I started making projects a bit bigger than your usual 200-line "program that does x" it becomes hard to keep track of where everything is

yes, but for the usual "fuck off, world", or smth you do not need an IDE, it is better to memorise the basic syntax even more since its no uni course and he will not have an IDE on his exams.

Hmm, I see. I learned all that basics while using an IDE. I guess it was slower than doing what you said, but I don't think it was bad at all, having all the things I needed to test my programs saved some time too I believe. Although I was really into it for some time (now that passion just went off unfortunately) so I guess I learned quicker than usual and for learning quick the methos you propose is probably better
