Buddhism is fine if you are essentially a nihilist, anti-natalist who is content to see out his life with as little turmoil as possible. It is fine for the individual who is already so inclined. However, it is utterly useless at the base purpose of a religion, which is to guide and form civilizations. "Do nothing" is not a valid philosophy when it comes to the growth of nations, of human civilization as a whole. There has never been a large society based on Buddhism. India is mostly Hindu, China is Taoist and Confucian. Buddhism is for loners and monks. I agree that it is based and I would consider myself Buddhist-adjacent, but yeah, it's not the religion for the masses and never was meant to be. It's hard to even consider a religion.

In Buddhism's case, reality is merely likened to an illusion, such as in the Diamond Sutra. This is because phenomena arise and pass away so quickly that everything is like a "bubble in a stream." You need to read more into it. They don't claim conventional reality is just an illusion in our sense of the term.

Jain metaphysics
Nyaya/Vaisheshika

The reason we celebrate uposatha (full moon night) every month is because when the moon is waxing full the tides are at their most drastic and so are the fluids in our bodies. I say Zen, but I was mostly trained in Tibetan Buddhism--Dzogchen and Mahamudra. They are great traditions. My views on reincarnation can be complicated. I think it is real but we have no way of remembering or comprehending the kind of life we had before or might have next, because it might not even be in a 3D universe.
