I'm from Manchester. so, I'll spoil the surprise that most of that people here are too stupid to realise what the lyrics mean, never mind how it might relate to this situation. It's just the song they heard on the radio 10 years ago and they don't know anything else by Oasis.
Mancunians are very simple people, and most of them were likely drunk and on their way to a football match.
They probably just mumbled the chorus to the song and then trailed off a beer garden somewhere to shout "CAM ON U REDS!!!" or "CAM ON U BLUES" at a television in the corner of a pub for the next 1-2 hours.
