Not a single member of my extended family plays a musical instrument, speaks a second language, plays a sport, attends a church or really even have any hobbies, interests, beliefs or convictions at all. My parent's fundamental philosophy is that life is none of their business. There is no family culture at all. I am an only child, and I have cousins I have seen less than 5 times in my life and many, many extended family members that I have never met.
My father drove a taxi and then bought one, which he drove until the mortgage was paid and he retired. My mother has essentially never worked. A girlfriend of mine once remarked, somewhat carefully, embarrassed - "It's like your parent's don't know anything about you. I've never seen anything like it."
