I found a job last year that is paying me well but I'm filling in for someone who is on medical leave and my contract won't be renewed. I have applied to hundreds of jobs without success. I cannot find a job that I am even overqualified for, but even if I could I would not. I need $35-$40/hour minimum and even then that is not enough to live comfortably and build any sort of future for myself.

My boomer dad and me had a big falling out at 18 and he kicked me out. I wanted to go to college but I had no way to. The only job I could get was working construction framing houses. It fucking sucked, I knew I didn't want to do that for 40 years.

One day the fence contractor didn't show up to build the fences for the houses we were building. They were needing a new fence guy. So, I took what little money I had and got the license to build fences. They hired me, and I built the fences on my own on the weekends. That turned into more fences, which turned into building decks. Five years of that, and I started to get actual new construction framing jobs. I did that for another three years during the building boom leading up to the 08 crash. I made a lot of money quick that way. After the crash I was able to buy land cheap. I bought a bunch of land at the beach. I always wanted a beach house so I built myself one. That was the first time I ever really worked for myself. Once I got the certificate of occupancy on the house, had an insurance appraisal, and realized how much it was worth, I immediately put it up for sale. After that I just started buying more land to build more beach houses.

Five years of that and I had more money than I would ever need, and I had some bad personal things happen. So, I stopped working.

I got bored after a couple of years, and decided I wanted to build myself a new home. But, the county denied my permit and rezoned my beach property to commercial. So, as a fuck you to them I built a bar/restaurant on it. That was ten years ago. Now, I don't do much. Just go to the bar, spend time with my family and shitpost with you guys.

Or maybe I give hand jobs behind the McDonald's. Regardless, I don't see where what I do matters. My point still stands. Working for other people is a bad way to spend your one life.

What is "valuable" that can be produced by one person? Seriously name ome fucking thing. Because that is not remotely it. I can make fuckin tables and carpentry shit, do cnc machining or 3d printing to create random plastic crap, pretty much whatever. I can't build complex machinery or a fucking house by myself, but short of that, you name it i can probably make it.

Have you seen what they charge for a custom table today? You probably could make a lot of money building tables.

The main point is what you do with your earnings. You pretty much have to reinvest everything you make. Spend five years building tables and reinvesting your profits and you probably will be doing well.

It's a ladder you have to climb. And, I'm not saying it will be easy, or that you will be successful. I'm saying it makes more sense to try it, than it does to just be a wagie for your entire life.

Rich people, they will pay $10k for a custom table. We have an abundance of those people where I am. My niece buys old shit furniture at flee market for $80, then refinishes them with distressed finishes and sells them online and at boutique stores for $500.

Idk where you find people to commission one. You'd probably need to build one first, them try to sell it. Then, whatever you made you would need to take every penny, and use it to make a nicer table to sell. Then, do it again. You try to snowball your profits back into the business.
