>>22121258getting salmonella from unwashed eggshells is like, THE way of getting salmonella.
The pros of making egg manufacturer's wash the eggs:
nobody else has to worry about cross-contamination from the eggs down the line(shipping, containers, countertops, etc.). ie. the eggs themselves are safe to handle.
cons:
eggs lose their protective coating and wet surfaces that are contaminated can make the eggs unsafe
The pros of manufacturer's not doing it (ie. europoor version):
eggs have their protective coating:
eggs have their protective coating and are far less likely to become unsafe from contact with a dirty surface
cons:
eggs carrying salmonella on the exterior is far far more likely and any surfaces eggs come in contact with would need to be considered contaminated until the egg is thoroughly washed by the consumer.
I prefer the USA version. It makes it easier on the consumer and harder on the manufacturer, but the egg manufacturer has the capital and incentive to be cost effective about it and can optimize the process of washing the egg at scale, unlike the consumer.
