Atheism itself might as well be a religion. Empirically speaking, people who refer to themselves as "atheists" tend to hold beliefs that fall into a distinct and characteristic constellation. One extremely typical atheist behavior is the insistence that they get to just "define" atheism in a way that includes a bunch of people who would never willingly associate themselves with self-proclaimed atheists.
If you argue this point to an atheist and he starts to lose the argument, sooner or later he will revert to arguments of the form "but your religion says such and such" or "you religious people are so and so", even if you never express any theistic beliefs. At that point, he will have determined that you are NOT an atheist, even though you may very well be one by his bogus definition, simply because you disagree with his characteristic atheist philosophy and atheist pattern of thought. This WILL happen REGARDLESS of your belief in deities or lack thereof, demonstrating his own intuitive rejection of the definition he proposes.
