Otherwise you will end up as the kind of asshole who gets eaten by a lion and no one will give a fuck. Also, you have to live with the knowledge that you let a kid die. With a big enough perspective nothing really matters. But on a smaller one, you have a brain, with emotions. Therefore it is logical to appease those emotions until your ultimately meaningless death
