also idk if they teach this anymore but, if you're ever in the woods, you should find a point of running water and drink from that, rather than still water or pond water

You're tasting the minerals and other compounds dissolved in the water. Not the actual water. You can get extra purified water and try that but drinking a lot (such as more than one cup) is dangerous as it messes with your electrolyte balance.
