I find ravioli and similar stuffed pasta is maybe the best use for it.
I put the pasta inside and preheat it with some boiling water from the kettle. Then I pour it out and fill it with boiling water again and close it so it cooks at boiling temp, not just soaks it.
I've cooked small potatoes, soups and rice in my bad boy with just 1min of kettle

I understand your concern since quality controls in your cunt sucks. I've got a quality brand one up to EU standards though, not Thermos. A short/wide one situable for meals is recommended.
You don't cook on it actually. Is more like maintaining the food hot enough for the time it needs to become edible. Pour simple foods inside, add boiling water and forget about it. Still hot when hungry so no reheating. Simple and cheap on the go hot meal. Where you use an hour worth of energy to make stovies for instance, you only use 1 minute to boil the water on a kettle or microwave instead, but then you need to let it "cook" passively about double the normal time inside the vacuum jar. For pasta and rice is very quick though.

all that heat/energy passively lost from the water when you're cooking on a stove
it gets contained within the insulated thermos and goes into the food
