>>22388965But he did not claim to be king like the Herods, but a Priest-king with legal familial ties to the Hasmonean widow, whom was his stepmother, and the Egyptian heir, whom was his mother, and the senior heirs of the lineage of Judah, whom adopted him.
Ontop of these 3 political claims, his patrilineal line was also held in religious regard by the jewish people, as "The Messiah" referred to the lineage of Massinissa, whom they believed to be King Davids banished lineage from his son with Sauls daughter Michal.
So to summarize;
Jesus had a claim to Judea because it used to be a client part of his grandmothers Egypt.
His stepmother was the widow of the Hasmoneans.
His adoptive family was the senior heirs of the Tribe which the land of Judea was named from.
The people of this land regarded his lineage as an exiled claimant of their royalty.
The Herods had nothing but an arbitrary decree signed by people in Rome,- whom the families related to Jesus sought to inform Rome of in order to dethrone the Herods.
It's not that they wanted Jesus to be "King", but that he had every reason to claim to be one, which would put him ahead of the Herods among the people.
When Jesus was asked on wether he was the king of the Jews by Pilate, there was also an undertone on wether he wanted to publically announce war against the Herods, or if it was a simple truth.
Pilate understood that Jesus had the traditional right to oppose the Herods, but that Jesus also was a priest who just happened to wish his people to follow their traditions, unlike what the Herods represented.
