is it a synth, or an android like Data? I don't find Data unnerving at all. most people don't. if it's almost entirely indistinguishable then it usually won't bother people, otherwise they would have used an actual machine for that role to stop the audience from being grossed out. it's marketing.
now, you can also just make them not human, but humanoid. nothing stops you from anthropomorphizing the machine like a cartoon character, which is how we got animatronics. but you walk a very fine line trying to market one, because shocker it's easy to make five nights at freddy's.
