The idea that "nature will take care of it", as others have said, is indeed true. But that applies to everything, including humans. If a human has lung cancer then eventually "nature will take care of it" and they'll die an excruciating death. But would I want to go through that? No. I'm fine with applying the same logic to an animal that I would apply to myself.

Poor thing cannot be saved and is doomed to suffer in agony until it finally expires.
Better to give it God's mercy - as quick and painless an end as possible.
I have a small farm.
Animals that are badly injured and suffering is something I have seen before.
If they cannot be saved, then better to give them peace.
Even family pets.
It is what it is. Our duty as stewards of the Earth.

when my birds injure each other they get a pellet to the back of the skull because I don't feel like taking care of an injured bird nor dealing with the bird that injured it doing it again to another. this is not my bird so i keep walking and forget about it. it's none of my business.

Neither. Just move on with your life. It isn't your responsibility. Nature will handle it. Some predator will easily put it out of its misery. Maybe that will be a bigger bird. Maybe it will be a cat or dog. Why deprive them of a hunt and a meal?

We have a duty to be good stewards of the Earth.
To be good, useful and faithful servants of God.
That means caring for those we share this world with.
I have had animals I have raised from newborns be either attacked or injured so badly they could not be saved. It happens.
They look to you for help.
I try to comfort them as best I can, tell them they were good and faithful friends and apologize I could not save them.
And then I end them.
It does not happen often, but it does happen sometimes.
A family pet mauled by coyotes, still alive, but dying... looking to you for help.
I will help send you further on with dignity - a good and true friend.

Do what you can to improve it. If you know what's wrong you know what's better, try to provide that to it. Pain relief is best through solving the problem.

Treat it as it's whole. The furthest end you can fathom. Give pleasures that shift focus from pain and flaws. Give what good you've got and make more. Encourage it to make the best of what they have functioning. Show it it's good side. Make being hurt less of an issue. Healed and ready to be hurt again, thinking less of it. Braver.

Make signs of struggle or injury seem attractive as evidence of bravery. They were beautiful in a world unable to maintain them itself. The will be nice despite conditions and threat. So to be trusted with nice things, sure they won't be turned to suit conditions. Conditions will change for them. Provided a structure to build beauty/heaven.

Use what advancement has been achieved. Machines should be able to do what's required from reference, others and what's remaining. Or help what's left grow and be shaped to complete the rest. Animals need to be better. Experience may lead their kind in slight steps up. Passing on, or gaining themselves. Shouldn't be improved too much they become unattractive to their own kind, considered something else. Still need affection of their own. Make a way improvements are approved. Opposite sex in particular. Their showing off incorporating advancement they have over the others less brave and beautiful. Make them capable enough a repeated scenario or situation will be triumphed, and brave thing going further, onward to being better. In any situation making advancement. Overcoming inadequacy, keeping life special. Hard to hold a lot of advancement, so bank it in eachother. Get bigger and keep others the same size as you so you don't lose too much and fall, acceleration and speed of decent taking you under them. Or looking down with disgust instead of respect. Though things specialised in some little thing, as that in being, might be nice...
