nature fills in niches across long timespans
precarious self-balancing, self-regulating systems
one thing cannot be "consumed" without being transformed into something else
once there's enough of a surplus of that product, nature will incorporate that into its systems
there's no way to annihilate resources, there are no "finite resources".
what's happening right now is humans have thrown the system out of balance, that's it.
when you introduce a HUGE oversupply of food to a population of any species, the population grows. but then, once the food is consumed, the population doesn't simply drop back down to normal levels, it's actually permanently reduced
