As for the rest of Australia: Meh. I'm not impressed by the whole venomous spiders and snakes thing. It's not that I think the claim is false, it's that really you're not going to get hurt unless you're a fucking idiot.
I've camped in jungle, and yes, there are poisonous things. But there's no malevolence in insects, they're biological computers-- don't do anything to trigger their bite protocol and you'll be fine. I've been in much more danger here at home, hiking early-early morning.
Snakes are another fucking story, snakes are cunts.
But they're nothing compared to spotting a cougar frozen in the tall grass, staring at you. Or an extremely hungry bear.
