Jokes aside, they probably fucked up (Russians aren't running the best organized outfit in the world as you might have noticed in the past 4 years), if they knew more about the guy, he would probably get some reasonably safe assignment so they could keep milking the propaganda potential. He'd be mostly useless as an intelligence asset, there's not a lot you can pump out of a rebellious tankie larper estranged son, it's not like dad was very likely to discuss sensitive stuff with a guy who does everything in his power to let everyone around him know that he thinks the US establishment is the Big Satan.
