One of the biggest things that disappointed me when I came to Japan was the fact that people couldn't read the majority of what was written on old tablets outside their shrines/temples. It really is a meme language and if you're not trained specifically reading it you're shit out of luck.

It really is sad that a country with such a long history is going to lose the understanding of the depth of what it produced because it's people are watching their own porn instead of doing what is in the videos they're watching.
Re: Immigration, they are desperate to get people doing menial labor from overseas and depending on the prefecture some countries third worlders work better than others (the Philippines being more preferable than others due to their work ethic and general grasp of English).
Simply offering competitive wages/family support for their citizens in the long term would work so much better but the old and wealthy do not want to cut off a slice of what they have for their progeny much like most other developed countries.
