Pro tip: buy a cheap used computer with the mobo you're looking for and upgrade around it.

I'm on a prebuilt I upgraded by this method instead of dropping 3 bands on a new rig.

~15min, more or less. You just gotta wait till the gun gets to about 360°F, hot enough to melt soldering tin, and then move the gun around the area where the component is soldered. The trick is just waiting till it's hot enough to desolder components but not hot enough to actually burn them inside.

Thats actually whats in my 7-8 year old build lmao. It plays most stuff just fine, might have to lower graphics on some games. The problem isnt videogames, the problem is i need an AI workhorse
sooo instead of getting something brand new and actually good like a 5060ti (16GB version lmaono at 8GB) or a 5070ti, im spending even more money getting a used 3090. Its still going to get work done but there is no way in hell my stingy ass is going to shell out over $3,000 for a 5090 when i just want to make use of some LLMs (unless its absolutely necessary then i'll just quickly resell the 3090 and hate myself even more)

"back in the day" we had PCI cards that did things other than graphics processing. You'd think that by now we'd have an AI-specific card that wasnt tied to the demand of wanting 200fps at 4k or whatever the fuck the desirable output is. Shit, i remember going from a 60hertz monitor to 144hz and actually finding the difference to be incredibly noticable. Maybe i just havent reached those 'goon' levels of videogaming yet

This is exactly what i was talking about in >>22772099, being so deep into such 'goon territory' levels of videogaming. You keep chasing that framerate or chasing that resolution and its never good enough. I dont really get it. My stepdad is really into gaming and he's probably shaking his head as to why in the hell i'd buy a used 3090 over a cheaper 5070ti which has better gaming performance; the answer being that im not buying it for gaming performance alone and i think it has other values which are more important.

Just found out that the 5090 doesn’t support 32 bit physx.
Luckily I haven’t got rid of my old 3090 yet so I think I’ll use it as a dedicated physx card.

Used 2080 ti or 3080 are 200-300

LESS quantized, I'd call it.
the 3/4/5 bit stuff is quantized to the edge of usefulness.
8 and 16 bit weights are quantized too, just less severely.
training works on 32 bit weights. that is unquantized. training on 16 bit weights or mixed 16/32 bit weights is a research area but not "practical" in any sense.

The only thing I'd use a laptop for while lying down in bed is to watch something. I have a wall mounted roku TV. I can watch youtube on it. I also have a home server running emby with a library of TV series, movies, anime etc that I can watch on any TV in my house.

Therefore a laptop has no practical use to me.
