They have almost zero connection other than borrowing the Chinese alphabet (like viet's, Koreans, and other non Chinese groups did, it would be like Brits are just island Italians because they both use latin script), and some aesthetic and arts practices for a brief period (the heian period) and then quickly abandoning or japanizing most of it.
Japanese (Jomon) developed between 14,000 BC and 300AD completely independently from any mainland group and only mixed with people from the KOREAN peninsula (Yayoi peoples, coming from Proto-Koreanic, Manchu groups, also completely unrelated to any sinic groups) between 300bc-300Ad.
So no, japs are not just island Chinese. If anything in modernity they are like Slanty German/American hybrids with their own twist more than anything
